A dog is a man’s best friend! Dogs are known to be loyal to their owners, developing a special kind of bond throughout their entire life journey as a companion and a best friend. But what exactly are Pitbulls? Pit bulls were created in the UK during the 19th century and were developed from a mix between Old English Bulldogs and various terrier dog breeds. But how long do pitbulls live? Let’s get into it!!

How Long Do Pitbulls Live?

The average age that a Pitbull can live is 12 years, but that is not always the case because some can live up to 15 years. It all depends on several factors that can influence the life span of a dog. It might seem contrary to its appearance of having a tough build, a muscular body, and a charismatic look, but appearances and life span don’t always align with each other. Although keeping them healthy can prolong their risk of having health-related problems,

The word “Pitbull” doesn’t literally mean a breed of a dog but a term used to associate a variety of dog breeds that has any stocky body type with a smooth coat. But here the info regarding the different lifespans of the different types of breeds of Pitbull to understand their life spans.

  • American Bulldog: 10-16 years
  • Pit Bull Terrier: 12-16 years
  • American Staffordshire Terrier: 12-16 years
  • Staffordshire Terrier: 12-14 years
  • English Bull Terrier: 11-14 years

Other Factors That Affect The Lifespan of Pit bulls

  • Gender

Generally, female Pit bulls live longer compared to male ones.

  • Genetics

More likely, a Pitbull that came from a healthy family can live longer than those in rescue facilities.

  • Lifestyle

This calls for the responsibility of the owner in taking care of his/her pets.

  • Size

Large dogs age faster than smaller ones according to researchers.

What Diseases Can a Pitbull Have?

While health issues aren’t new to almost every kind of breed of dogs, the most common among Pit bulls are heart issues. Like Aortic stenosis which restricts blood flow from the left ventricle to the aorta resulting in pressure and pain in the heart.

Another one is called valve malformation which is congenital that disrupts blood flow from the heart to the body and lastly is an irregularity in heart rhythm, where oxygenated blood is not pumping efficiently, harming the heart and the body if not treated proactively.

Other health-related issues include skin allergies and cancer originating from their skin that is why visiting vets for regular check-ups is essential and may prevent diseases from becoming more worse.

How To Make Your Pitbull Live Longer?

1. Regular vet visits for health check-ups and monitoring.

2. Exercise with your dog. A simple walk with your dog is already a great exercise for both of you. Plus mind exercises for Pit bulls are also good because it increases their canine intelligence.

3. Proper nutrition. Feed him foods that are appropriate for dogs and maintain having a healthy weight. Avoid feeding too much food.

4. Develop a “dog care routine” to follow and to be practiced every day.

What Pitbull Lived The Longest?

Surprising as it may seem there have been reports that some Pitbulls lived for 20 years but Max, an American Pitbull Terrier from Lousiana in the United States of America is considered to have lived the longest, recorded living for 26 years.

Dogs are part of the family as they share with our home, our food, and some people also share their beds with their beloved dogs. They relieve our stress and make us feel that we are in comfort. With every death, there is sadness, the feeling that is very hard to let go of the memories of the past. A dog won’t live forever but with enough time with your dog, providing them with time, love and care can make their life longer and joyful as possible.
