How To Tell If A Dog Is In Pain? Sadly, dogs can’t talk to us but they can still communicate. They will use behavior and body language to tell us something. As a dog owner, you need to know and understand that language. This will help you understand your dog more. You will also know how to tell if a dog is in pain which is mandatory. When you know that your dog is in pain, you can help him.  Below we have 9 signs that can make this process easier.

Signs Of A Dog In Pain

Dogs Will Change His Drinking, Sleeping, And Eating Habits

One of the best ways to tell is to look at the change of most common habits. These are sleeping, eating, and drinking. How to tell if a dog is in pain? He will sleep more. Dogs do this to recover or they don’t have energy so they need to rest more. They will also eat less and drink water less. For example, when a dog refuses to eat, he may have dental pain. He may also have problems swallowing.

Dogs Are Grooming All The Time

When you see a dog who is licking his paws all the time, he tries to soothe himself. If he is in pain, a dog will do this. We can add that cuts and visible wounds are more common explanations here and they are obvious. But dogs can do the same thing when they have pain internally.

They Are More Vocal

Many dogs who are in pain are more vocal. They will howl, bark, snarl, and yelp all the time. This is one of the easiest and usually the first sign most dog owners notice. We can say that your pet tries to tell you that he is in pain so you need to listen to him. However, not all dogs who are in pain do this so keep that in mind.

Dog Is Aggressive Or Antisocial

You can see that your dog is hiding from you? If he does this, he is likely in pain. Most dogs do this because they don’t want snow pain or weakness. They need time to recover by themselves and without anyone knowing that they are recovering. As you may know, this is antisocial behavior and it means that something is wrong.

Some dogs may become aggressive and they will show that! You need to stay calm and careful. Even if you have an old dog who has been with you for decades, you still need to be careful and take him to a vet.

Restlessness

In the lack of a better word your dog is agitated all the time. He will sleep less, be nervous and show you that. Your dog is basically trying to tell you that something is wrong. Pain is one of the most common things he will try to tell you about. One way you can tell if this is present is to look how much time he needs to get comfortable. If he can’t make himself comfortable, he is probably in pain or has some problem.

Dog Changes In Panting And Breathing

Dogs who are in pain will breathe shallowly. They may also pant more than ever before. When they breathe shallowly, it can suggest that they have pain when breathing. Of course, we are referring to panting when the temperature is not high and your dog isn’t very active.

Dog Trembling or Shaking

Shaking and trembling may look like your pet is cold. In many situations this is obvious. On the other hand, we can see that these are actually signs that your pet is in pain. He may suffer from kidney disease, poisoning, and pancreatitis. These are actually muscle tremors and they are common when a dog eats something that is toxic to him. We can see that dogs who consume mold, xylitol, or chocolate may suffer from muscle tremors. These are all toxic to dogs and they can kill your pet!

Avoid Or Slowly Moving

When a dog moves slowly or he refuses to move this is known as a mobility issue. They come in all different possibilities. For instance, you may have a dog who will refuse to move at all. Some dogs will avoid climbing stairs. Others will avoid exercising and they will lie down the entire day.

We can’t generalize the topic here. This can happen when a dog has arthritis so moving around is painful. Some dogs can do this when they have pain in their limbs or muscles. All we can say is that dogs who refuse to move can be in pain, especially while moving. In addition, if they move slowly or much slower than usual, it means pain as well.

Dog Changed Posture

Dogs who are in pain may change their posture. One of the most common changes is known as the ‘’prayer’’ position. It means that his front legs will be lower while his bottom will be high in the air. You can see why this position comes with this name. When this happens, it means that your pain has abdominal pain! You have to take him to a vet as soon as you can.

In some cases, you can also see swelling. You can notice these in paws, face, and legs. When this happens, it means that your pet has inflammation. But the same issues can occur due to cancer and infection. These are severe issues and your pain may be in life-threatening condition!

The Final Word

Now you know how to tell if a dog is in pain, so well done! Thanks to these signs you can help your pet easier and in less time. You will have to take him to the vet if you notice any of these and especially if they have been lasting for a long period of time. Keep in mind that some dogs may have multiple signs, while some can have just one or two.
