For humans, orange juice is one of the best drinks out there. It is loaded with vitamin C and it has a positive effect on the immune system, the digestive tract, and a lot more. Can dogs consume orange juice and get the same benefits? Not quite. Now we will explain why this is the case and why this juice is not something your dog needs.

Orange Juice Doesn’t Have Any Benefits To Dogs

Can dogs consume orange juice? Yes, they can. Should they drink it? Not really. See, the main thing here to know is that orange juice is not toxic to dogs. They can drink it occasionally and nothing bad will happen. So if you see a dog drinking a bit of orange juice, don’t panic. But, dogs won’t get any health benefits from this juice. We will as you know by now.

The main advantage of orange juice is its high Vitamin C count which has a huge effect on our immune system. Dogs make vitamin C by themselves hence they don’t need supplements or orange juice to provide them with this vitamin. As such, they won’t get any perks.

The only benefit here is water. Yes, dogs will use water from the juice only, hence it is better to give him fresh water. Sadly, there are some issues with orange juice so we can deduce that the cons are bigger than the pros.

You can argue that orange juice is mandatory or even important during warmer months. But, there are much better treats for that. You can even make ice cream for your dog that is healthy, safe, and beneficial in many other ways. Still, the best thing your pet needs when the temperature is high is water.

Plain yogurt smoothies are another thing you can use. Just make sure that all the ingredients you will use in it are safe for dogs. There are a lot of them that are toxic for dogs!

Possible Health Concerns

Orange juice is highly acidic. This is a big problem for dogs. In the short-term, this beverage can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and upset stomach in general. If your pet drinks this juice for much longer, he can end up with dental problems and also gum issues.

Orange juice is high in sugar as well. Dogs don’t need sugar and not in these amounts. Your dog will be at a higher risk of gaining weight (dogs can gain weight fast) and also tooth decay. Obese dogs are at a much higher risk of developing diabetes and heart complications that are all severe.

Other than this, there are no major issues or complications. Generally speaking, orange juice is not toxic, especially in smaller amounts. However, in certain situations and when a dog drinks too much of this juice, these problems are going to manifest. Also, sick dogs or dogs with certain health conditions should avoid orange juice. Those pets usually need a special and proper diet that will help them with the condition and not cause any additional problems or symptoms.

Can Dogs Or Should They Eat Oranges?

Yes, they can eat oranges in small amounts. This is not the best fruit for them (the best one is something we will reveal later) but nothing bad will happen. In reality, there are some minor health benefits. The first one is from potassium. Dogs can benefit from this mineral. The heart, kidney function, and also muscle function are all going to thrive.

Oranges also contain manganese that helps with joints hence it may be a good option for senior dogs. It also helps with protein metabolizing which will give your pet more energy.

There are a few more perks but none of these are major or game-changing. A much better option to give to your dog is a carrot. It is lower in sugar and it has plenty of health benefits. It is also something most dogs prefer due to its hard texture.

It is mandatory to never feed a dog whole orange. It is too big hence it is a true choking hazard. Cut oranges into small pieces. The size of the piece should reflect the size of your dog. A small dog will need smaller pieces. While bigger dogs need and can eat a bit bigger pieces of oranges.

There is no need to add that you have to remove the peel and the seeds. They are not something your pet will enjoy eating and they can even cause issues with the digestive system.

What You Should Do If Your Dog Drank Orange Juice?

You don’t have to do anything. This is a common thing and most dogs will like the taste. But, odds are low that they will drink a lot of it hence you don’t need to treat this as an emergency. No, there is no need to take him to a vet.

You need to provide him with plenty of water and let him rest. In the worst case scenario, he will have diarrhea for a couple of hours or a day. After that, he will recover and nothing bad will happen.

The only exception here is if you have a dog suffering from diabetes. You will want to make sure his diet and beverages do not include elements that are loaded with sugar. The problem is if your dog drinks a lot of orange juice. It is better to take him to a vet just to rule out any severe complications.

The Final Word

We believe now you have all your answers. Can dogs consume orange juice? They can but they shouldn’t. There are no health benefits here hence there is no reason to give them this juice.  On the other hand, we can see some potential issues hence it is better to avoid orange juice completely. If your dog drinks a small amount, he will be fine.

Orange juice is not a poison or something similar to dogs. Always remember that the main thing a dog will need and take from this juice is water. Why give him orange juice when you can give him fresh water to drink?
