People often refer to the mastiff as a “gentle giant” because this kind of dog appears to be very strong and massive but is generally very good-hearted at the same time. However, what else is there to learn about the English Mastiff? For example, how long do mastiffs live on average? Keep reading to find out!

How Long Do Mastiffs Live?

Well, the short answer is that mastiffs generally can live 9–11 years, which is not bad at all for such a massive dog race.

Of course, you should nuance this answer a little bit, since there are a lot of things that can happen to a Mastiff’s health that might not make it possible for the Mastiff at hand to grow as old as described. Fortunately, mastiffs are actually very healthy, fit dogs with not a lot of medical conditions and other health problems.

Health-Related Issues

To be more concrete, there are a couple of health conditions that people associate with this specific dog race, but the Mastiff is remarkably tough compared to certain other types of dogs. However, it remains true that hip problems are relatively common with mastiffs, as is the case with almost any other type of big dog out there.

Additionally, cardiovascular diseases can also pose a real problem when you have a Mastiff, but this is definitely not something that only occurs with Mastiff dogs. Another thing you should keep in mind is that gastric torsions regularly occur with Mastiffs, but you can easily lower this risk by feeding your dog multiple, small portions of food throughout the day instead of one big one. Besides that, there aren’t many health issues when it comes to mastiffs.

Appearance

Before diving into the lifespan of a mastiff, it’s important to describe what this kind of dog actually looks like. Well, mastiffs are, in essence, really big, short-haired dogs that appear to be remarkably strong and sturdy. Particular about Mastiffs is that they have a very prominent skull and a relatively broad jawline, again adding to their forceful look.

When it comes to size and weight, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Mastiff can get really big. On average, mastiffs weigh about 80 kilos, or 175 pounds. However, they can also easily weigh up to 100 kilos, or 220 pounds. Furthermore, the height of the withers of a mastiff ranges between 70 and 90 centimeters, or between 28 and 36 inches.

Lastly, mastiffs have very short and smooth fur. Because of this fur, the Mastiff’s pertinent muscles really get the chance to shine. They come in different colors, namely fawn, brindle, and apricot. Moreover, the mastiff’s ears are cropped, and this dog has wrinkles on its forehead, which is very specific to this kind of dog. Besides that, it’s also worth mentioning that the skin around the mastiff’s mouth and nose is darker than elsewhere on its face.

Characteristics

As opposed to what some people might think based on the Mastiff’s appearance, this dog is actually very soft and kind by nature. To make this less abstract, they can stay calm in very stressful situations and are really good with other dogs, animals, and even children. Consequently, that’s precisely why the Mastiff is an ideal dog for small families looking to adopt a dog.

Besides being a family dog, the Mastiff is also the perfect guard dog because it’s a dog that just demands respect. Moreover, Mastiffs are extremely brave, cautious, and loyal to their owners, meaning that you can really trust the Mastiff dog to keep you safe in certain scenarios. Additionally, mastiffs can get really protective of their owners in dangerous situations, which is always a great quality in a dog!

Conclusion

All in all, Mastiffs should be able to live to be about 9 to 11 years old without taking certain health-related issues into account. Luckily, this type of dog is, generally speaking, relatively healthy, certainly in comparison to certain other types of dogs. In addition to this, the Mastiff has a phenomenal personality, and you could say the same about its appearance. Thus, this dog definitely deserves more attention!
