There are a lot of questions dog owners have on their minds at any given moment. Can I give my dog Benadryl and melatonin at the same time? Before we give you a simple answer, we will have to cover the main basics and reveal all the things you would normally want to know regarding this topic. It will be an amazing journey where we will explain all the main things you should know.

Can I Give My Dog Benadryl and Melatonin At The Same Time?

No, you cannot do this. The question is, therefore, easy and simple to answer. Anyway, giving both of these to your dog can be fatal, so you definitely don’t want to do this. Melatonin is a natural chemical produced and released by the body. Benadryl is not.

But when these two are given at the same time, the side effects may be extreme. Both of these will cause drowsiness. In high dosages, they can cause a lot of severe side effects. These can be given to a dog in small doses, but never combined. You should consult your vet before you start giving your dog Benadryl or melatonin.

Benadryl Shouldn’t Be used To help Your Dog Sleep

Some dog owners use or want to use Benadryl as sleep medications. After all, it causes drowsiness, so your dog should sleep better. This is not something you should do. It can cause massive side effects and have catastrophic results if your dog has been getting Benadryl for a long period of time.

Ideally, you will give Benadryl at a specific dosage. The best one is 1 mg per pound of weight. Also, always give the dosage 8 hours apart, and do not give this to pregnant dogs or those who have heart issues, lung issues, or seizures!

If you want to help your dog sleep better, the best thing to do is find the cause of insomnia. It can be a lack of exercise, which is common these days. It can also be caused by an allergy, infection, or some other health-related issue. Correcting that issue will solve the problem.

Benadryl and Mast Cell Tumors

Most dog owners who have pets with mast cell tumours are wondering if they can use Benadryl to treat this condition. The answer is no. Benadryl is used to treat sore eyes or mild skin irritation, not mast cell tumors, which are formed when white blood cells combine and form a mass.

There are special treatments for that, and those are far more effective than Benadryl. Keep that in mind, and as always, your vet should help you make the right choice, and your dog deserves proper treatment.

Benadryl and Anxiety In Dogs

This is another example where we can see that not all medications and supplements are ideal for all cases. For example, many dog owners are wondering if they can use Benadryl to treat anxiety. Sadly, the answer is no. If you think Benadryl causes drowsiness, it should be effective in calming your pet. In reality, it has the opposite effect, which makes it a big mistake in this particular case.

You may want to keep your dog in a dark room and turn the TV on. The music should help your pet relax, and it will block sounds from the environment. But you should not try to calm your pet by reinforcing this behavior. You are literally telling him that it is ok to be anxious and scared all the time, which is the thing you actually want to eliminate.

Why Do Dog Owners Give Melatonin To Dogs?

Yes, it is safe to give melatonin to dogs, and some owners have been doing this for years. There are specific cases when and why you should do this. The main reason is to make a dog calmer. For instance, if he hates thunderstorms, you would give him melatonin in order to help him make the time pass without a single issue. Dogs can also get melatonin due to separation anxiety or any other type of anxiety, hyperactivity, phobias, and a few other conditions. In addition, melatonin can be used to treat Cushing’s disease, but only when its strength is mild.

Melatonin is something that promotes hair growth. All dogs have hair, so this supplement can be used to make the hair grow faster and also look shiny. It isn’t commonly given to dogs for this reason, but some dog owners believe it is the best supplement of this kind.

If you are giving melatonin to your dog, the proper dosage is a must. For instance, a dog weighing 10 pounds or less needs 1 mg. A dog with a weight of 10 to 25 pounds needs 1.5 mg, and those that are between 26 and 100 pounds will need 3 mg. Dogs who are very heavy—above 100 pounds—can get up to 6 mg of melatonin, but the ideal dosage is between 3 and 6 mg.

Keep in mind that there are some side effects that may occur. These include confusion, itching, issues with the digestive tract, a faster heart rate, and also the reproduction cycle in female dogs, which will be affected.

The Final Word

Can I give my dog Benadryl and melatonin at the same time, and is this a common thing? It is actually a common mistake. First of all, giving either of these two without help from a vet is a mistake.

Then we can see that when given in high doses together, the causes can be fatal! This is the last thing you want to do, so you do need more information before proceeding. The best thing to do is to read this article and then contact your vet if you have a reason for giving melatonin or Benadryl to your pet.
