We all had a dog who will carry a stick all the time. But, why dogs lie to carry sticks on walks, and what you should do? The answer to the second question here is simple. You don’t have to do anything. This is perfectly normal and most dogs will do it at some point. On the other hand, there are a few reasons why dogs like to do this. Here are a few of, most common reasons.

Reasons Why Dogs Like to Carry Sticks On Walks

1. As A Result Of Instincts

When hunting with their owners, dogs were bred to retrieve prey. Of course, you don’t hunt, but this is their instinct, and it is in their blood. Hence, he will carry a stick and bring it back home due to this reason. The question of why dogs lie to carry sticks on walks is usually answered for this reason alone. But, there are other reasons as well, so you will want to continue reading.

2. He Wants To Play With You

Playing fetch with your dog is one of the best games you can play, period. Well, dogs have the same opinion, and they like to play this game all the time. If he carries a stick, he probably wants to tell you that the time for playing is near.

Try to throw away that stick and monitor his behavior. If he brings it back to you, the game is on. In addition, this reason is extremely common in dogs who used to play this game with their owners. As you can see, it is perfectly harmless, and there is no need to worry about it. Just play with your dog, and you will enjoy it.

3. He Seeks Attention

Dogs need and deserve a lot of attention from their owners. Bringing something to the owner is one of many ways a dog seeks attention. An interesting fact here is that a small dog will usually bring a big stick to you. Dogs believe that bigger is always better, so they will want to impress you. In their mind, a big stick will impress you more than a smaller one. This can be funny when you see a very small dog dragging a stick that is three times longer than the dog himself!

Of course, you need to reward your dog when he does this and help him understand this behaviour is positive. He may bring you other things as well, and usually the reason is the same.

4. Your Dog Is Making A Toy

Dogs love toys, and they love to play. When walking your pet, he doesn’t have a toy. Well, some pets will make one from a stick. Add the fact that each stick is different, and you can see that your pet has countless toys to choose from. Once again, we can see one interesting fact. Dogs will choose a stick that they like. Which one is chosen is determined by the dog himself.

Now we know that dogs love sticks and they will play with them all the time. But, why they love sticks in the first place? Well, there are a few answers and now we will present you with all of them.

  • They are similar to bones

Perhaps this doesn’t look obvious but sticks are long, thin and they come in all lengths. All of this means that your pet can see a bone in a stick and we all know how much dogs love bones. Yes, they can tell the difference, but they still like to play due to this reason.

  • Sticks may have a very interesting texture

Sticks come in all sizes and with countless textures. This makes them appealing to dogs. For instance, a sprout and a decaying wood have completely different textures and this is something all dogs just love. They use their mouth to check the texture and to play. It is like having countless toys at your disposal.

  • They help dogs who have teeth-related issues

Some dogs who have gum pain or are at the teething stage will like sticks even more. This is because a stick may help them relieve pain and get various perks regarding the gums and the teeth in general. Some sticks such as willow tree sticks have pain-relieving properties and dogs with tooth issues will just love those. He will want to bring that stick home so he can get a ‘’treatment’’ at home as well.

  • A variety of smells

Sticks have countless odors that dogs will smell instantly. These are extremely versatile and they are complex odors, which is important. Complex means that a dog will smell the natural odors of a tree, water elements, and countless other aromas. They have a powerful sense of smell so this is the reason why sticks attract the full attention of most dogs.

Some Sticks Must Be Avoided

In most cases, there is no risk of your pet chewing and playing with sticks. They are completely harmless. But, some trees are poisonous to dogs and as such you will want to keep those sticks away from a pet. The most dangerous ones are:

  • Yew
  • Red Maple
  • Black Cherry
  • Black walnut
  • Red Oak
  • Black Locust

There is no need to worry about all of these. Do proper research and discover which trees from the list are present in your area. Learn how they look and make sure your dog doesn’t come in contact with these trees only. It can be interesting research and it will certainly protect your dog.

The Final Word

Why dogs like to carry sticks on walks is an interesting question that comes with many explanations. The bottom line is that this is a harmless and interesting behavior that many dog owners appreciate. Just make sure that your dog doesn’t play with sticks from trees we have listed earlier. All others are completely safe and they can be the best toy for your dog. They are also the cheapest toy.
