If you are like most dog owners around the world, you probably have your dog sleeping inside and cuddling with you in the bed. Dogs are often treated like children and many people love having their pets snuggle up with them at night. Many people sleeping with dogs in their bed might have noticed some strange behavior from their pets while they sleep. In many cases, you might notice your dog sleeping with its eyes open. You might have also wondered and stressed whether they are alive when they sleep like this. However, it is all-natural.

If you are one of the many people who had to endure this scare or have resorted to waking up your dog to see if they are still fine, you should read this article. This article aims to help you better understand why this phenomenon occurs. You might even be surprised to learn that many people also sleep with their eyes open.

Do Dogs Sleep With Their Eyes Open?

While not all dogs might freak you out and sleep with their eyes open, some do. Most dogs will have certain times during the night at which their eyes are open when they sleep. Keep in mind that dogs can sleep an average of 12 to 14 hours. However, the sleep schedule could depend on various things like activity level and boredom.

For most dogs, you will notice that their eyes flicker while they sleep. This generally occurs during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. It is also the period when the dog is most prone to dreaming.Aside from having their eyes flicker, they might even be running when they are in REM sleep. It could simply be a dream.

REM sleep is one of the most important phases of sleep for any dog, and it is the time when everything heals in the body. If they have their eyes open during this period, it could be due to a variety of factors like dreaming. However, in the next section, we will look at why dogs sleep with their eyes open from time to time.

Why Do Dogs Sleep With Their Eyes Open?

You should also note that breeds have different sleeping patterns. Breeds like Beagles and Great Danes are notorious for having an eye open while they sleep. Due to their nature, it is a traditional method of being on guard. The dog can quickly react to anything that startles them, and can even spot an intruder.

Other dogs with bulging eyes like a traditional French Bulldog might seem like they have their eyes open. However, they don’t sleep with their eyes open, and they have a thin protective layer of film over the eyes that will keep them protected.

Much like humans, the sleep quality of your dog can also be influenced by things like stress and the safety the dog feels when they are sleeping. Since you want your dog to get a good night’s sleep, you would want to create a safe and comfortable environment. The more comfort they have, the better quality of sleep they should have.

Differences Between The Human And Dog’s Eye

While you might think that all mammals have the same eyes, this is not the case. Dogs tend to have better vision than most humans and they can see smaller things that humans often miss. Many dogs also have an additional third eyelid that protects their eyes and you will see that some of the dogs with bulging eyes heavily rely on this.

Dogs have these additional components to keep their eyes healthy and they cannot wear contacts or glasses when they have issues with their sight. The third eyelid tends to keep the eyes moist and ensure they have good vision. While humans did have a third eyelid, it has been changed through evolution due to the ability we have to wipe away any dust that settles in the eye.

Should You Be Worried If Your Dog Sleeps With Their Eyes Open?

It is easy for humans to become worried if they notice something unusual with their pets. Since pets can’t tell us what is wrong, many people jump to the worst conclusions when they notice something like sleeping with their eyes open. However, you should not have any reason to be concerned.

In most cases, it should be any one of the above mentioned reasons that lead to them sleeping with their eyes open. However, eye health is important and if you are worried about the health of their eyes, you might want to make an appointment with a vet. Keep in mind that if the eyelids have issues, their eyes can dry out.

Even if you are unsure about what is happening and feel like action needs to be taken, an appointment with your vet is the best solution. They will help you understand any potential niggles occurring with your dog. Keep in mind that you don’t always need to visit the vet for things that seem minuscule.

Can I Reduce The Chances Of Sleeping With Open Eyes?

The simple answer is no. Most dogs are bred with certain traits, and they often live by these traits. As a pet owner, you should only be wary of potential issues that might arise. By constantly monitoring their behavior, you should pick up on this. In most cases, a dog sleeping with open eyes should not be any reason for concern.

Wrap-Up

Why Do Dogs Sleep With Their Eyes Open? Your dog is often like your child, and they have a special place in our hearts and homes. Noticing strange things like dogs sleeping with their eyes open can be disconcerting. Fortunately, it is all part of their nature, and you should not be worried.
