Dogs don’t do things without any reason. As a matter of fact, they always do something due to a specific reason. But, each action has multiple explanations or better said reasons. Why do dogs sit on your feet? This has to be the best example. As you will see, there are many reasons why a dog will behave like this. Some are obvious while others will impress you. Let’s reveal all of them.

7 Reasons Why Do Dogs Sit On Your Feet

1. He is protecting you

You can see a dog sitting on the feet of the owner all the time. Why do dogs sit on your feet? One of the reasons is to protect him or her. All dogs have guarding instincts and that’s why they will be close to the owner. As close as they can. Sitting on your feet is extremely close and as such an ideal position to protect you when needed. Yes, it is a nice and appealing reason like no other. Keep in mind that some dog breeds are more prone to this than others.

2. Your dog is claiming you

All dogs have their territory and their things. They will claim those things. You can see a dog protecting his toy and he won’t allow anyone to touch it. Believe it or not, some dogs will claim you! Yes, it is a common thing that a dog will claim its owner and tell others that you belong to him. This is more common in specific dog breeds and can be extremely visible.

In most cases, a dog will do this when you are outside and when there are other dogs and people around you. In simple terms, he marks his territory and his property. This still means you are alpha.

This can be an issue if you have 2 dogs. In that case scenario, you will have to leave room for both of them. One should be next or on one foot while the other dog will be on the second foot. It is hard but mandatory. If this is an issue for you, take your dog to a dog behaviorist.

3. Affection

Dogs show affection to their owners all the time and this is more interesting than anything else. A dog who sits on your feet may do this to show you his affection. He may sit there for hours or many times per day. In general, a dog will do all kinds of things that are appealing to you. The affection is positive behavior and an appealing one we all like.

Always reward your pet with treats or play with him. You should help him understand that you approve of this behavior so he will show it more frequently.  In general, you should reward the dog when he does something nice and positive. You should not react or tell him that you are upset when he does a bad thing. This is used to help a pet understand actions he should show more and those he should avoid. It is a nice and essential part of the training.

4. It is their instinct

Dogs lived in the wild for centuries. There they have developed a simple and effective strategy. When wandering around they will always take a break together as a pack. The leader will be in the best position where he can see all potential threats.

Your dog doesn’t live in the wild. But these instincts are still in his blood and DNA. As such, he will sit on your feet as a result of that. He considers you the alpha and you have the best position. Your dog will be close to you in order to see the threat if there is one.

5. He feels safe

A dog feels the safest when he is next to the owner. If he sits on your feet, this may be the reason why. There he feels safe and sound. All dogs feel like that and they will find a position that works best for them. Some dogs will prefer sitting on your lap. Others will sit on your feet. One way or another, a dog feels secure on your feet and he likes it.

A dog can be scared of other dogs, people, actions, loud noises, and many other things. Just because you are not scared, it doesn’t mean your pet is feeling safe. Some dogs are more prone to this than others. Some dogs had trauma from the past and they are easily scared today.

6. It is a comfortable position

Sitting on the floor is not as comfortable as sitting on something else. Your feet are far more comfortable. That’s why a pet will sit on your feet rather than the hard floor. In the lack of a better word, he feels more comfortable and he likes it. You should know that a dog will also lie down next to you, sit on the couch, and other comfortable places.

7. Your dog wants to stay warm

It is an actually obvious and common reason. A dog will want to stay warm. Sitting on your feet makes this easier and possible. As the result, he will sit there every single time he can. Of course, this is more common when the temperature is low or your pet is small. You can see that a dog will lie down next to you, avoid going outside, or avoid anything that is cold. Now you know that your pet is cold and he needs and wants to get warm.

The Final Word

Why do dogs sit on your feet? It can be due to multiple or even all of these reasons. It can be due to just one or a few, which is more common. A dog sitting on your feet is not something he will do without an explanation. Now you know about them and you can understand your pet more. For most of us, this behavior is positive and desirable. We would like to see more dogs showing it.
