Most dogs will do something strange at any given moment. Rolling around is one of fun and nice things you can see your pet doing. But, why do dogs roll around after eating? Believe it or not, there are a few reasons and none of them is as simple as you may believe. Below we will discuss all of them and try to explain the matter in detail. Without further ado, let’s begin.

Reasons Why Do Dogs Roll Around After Eating

Lots Of Energy

The most common explanation is actually obvious and strange at the same time. Why do dogs roll around after eating? They have a lot of energy and they are feeling the energy boost. The sugar, calories, and energy come from food. Once a dog has more energy than ever before, he will do all sorts of things, and rolling around is a common one. Many dogs do this all the time.

In general, if a dog doesn’t eat for a long time and he eats a lot of food, he will get a lot of energy. He will use that energy to do something fun and weird. Rolling around looks like an obvious choice. You may believe that a dog should run when this happens. This is partially true. If you have a big backyard, he will do this. But, if you live in an apartment, he doesn’t have the ability to run. He will roll around on the floor instead.

To Clean Himself

Yes, this is another reason and the one that we can see in most dogs. First of all, a dog may believe that he is dirty after eating. Small parts of the food may be on the fur and he can sense them. At the same time, we can see that he is unable to clean the fur all by himself. The only thing he or she can do is roll around on the floor.

We want to add that some dogs will do this all the time, after every meal. Others will never do this due to this reason. They simply are not interested in being clean that much hence they will roll around due to a different reason.

To Mask The Scent

If a dog eats food that has a strong scent (most dog foods have) he will roll around on the ground. The goal here is to remove the scent and mask it. Dogs are predators and they have strong senses.

Removing the scent is ideal if he wants to mask the scent or his senses will have a hard time adjusting to the new scent. Keep in mind that this is not a common reason and many dogs will not do it unless they are unfamiliar with the scent or the scent is too strong.

Hide The Food

We can see a dog rolling around after a meal in order to protect the food. He wants to mask the scent and make it difficult for other dogs to find that food. This is a bit of a rare occasion unless you have more than just one dog. Dogs are clever and they will do all the things they can in order to try and keep all the food for themselves. Dogs also love food so this is a perfectly normal thing they will do.

Spread The Scent

This is a simple reason. A dog who is rolling around once he is done eating wants to tell other dogs that there is food and they can have it. At the same time, we can see that a dog wants to spread the scent of food. It smells great for all dogs and he just wants to make the scent more powerful and more appealing.

This is a particularly common thing if you have more than one pet. At the same time, we can add that if you hand feed your pet he is more likely to do this.

This Behavior Is Normal

We must add here that this behavior is normal and there is no need to correct it or do anything about it. In simple terms, most dogs will roll around on the floor after they have had a meal. They want to remove the scent, mask it or even clean themselves hence rolling around is mandatory. You don’t need to worry if a dog does this and you can even enjoy it.

Some dog owners claim that this is a great behavior and they love to watch their pets rolling around. Some are even trying to train a dog to do this. After all, this looks nice and it even tells you that your pet is happy and full. As such, you don’t need to try and eliminate the behavior.

The Final Word

We have all the reasons right here. Why do dogs roll around after eating? They want to clean themselves or remove the scent. These are the most common reasons but not the only ones. Also, it is possible that your pet does these things due to different reasons every single time. You should look at the details and try to deduce why a dog is doing this at that time.
