All dogs love to spend their time laying around and enjoying themselves. Some dogs are even strange when it comes to this. They will lie down on almost anything and always find interesting places. Why do dogs lay on your stomach? Well, there are 7 common reasons that explain the matter.

Keep in mind that your dog may do this due to one or multiple reasons and you will have to know which one is accurate so look at the details.

7 Reasons Why Do Dogs Lay On Your Stomach

  • You Are Pregnant

Believe it or not, this is a possible explanation and it is more common than you may think. A dog can smell your hormones or change them.

He will notice that your belly is bigger and a lot of other changes. Why do dogs lay on your stomach? They can sense that the owner is pregnant and they will lie on the stomach to protect the baby and stay close to the owner. Some dogs are far more accurate than any pregnancy test!

  • He Is Protecting You

Some dogs are very protective. They will do anything to make sure the owner is safe. When you lie down and sleep you are vulnerable. All dogs know this. As such, he will lie down on your stomach or next to you in order to protect you. Keep in mind that most dogs will not sleep.

They will just lie down on your stomach and look for any danger. It is not strange that someone enters the room at that moment. Your pet will start barking. He wants to protect and alert you at the same time.

  • He Feels Safe There

When a dog is lying on your stomach, he is obviously close to you. He believes that if something bad happens, you can protect him. While the previous reason refers to dogs who have strong protective instincts, this one refers to dogs who are gentler and usually have a need to feel safe.

A puppy can do this for the same reason. All animals want to feel safe at any given moment. Dogs have the privilege that their owners can protect them and make sure nothing bad will happen. In return, your pet will love you even more.

  • Separation Anxiety

These days separation anxiety in dogs is more common than ever before and it can be a huge problem. Most dogs suffer from it at some level. Separation anxiety can be a huge issue for dogs who are sick or old. If your dog has this problem, you can easily tell.

He or she will want to spend a lot of time as soon as you come home from work. Also, your dog will lay down on your stomach almost as soon as you are on the bed, he does this in order to be as close to you as possible. It works and your pet will feel much better. If your pet has separation anxiety, you need to help him and you need to take him to a professional.

  • Your Pet Is Too Cold

The temperature inside the room is low but you are warm. As such, a dog will lay on your stomach in order to get the warmth he needs. This is usually possible and even common with dogs that have short hair and don’t like the cold weather.

Try to heat up the room. If he moves, you will know that this is the reason. If he stays there, it means one of the other reasons is an explanation. Don’t assume that just because your pet has fir, he is always warm or even too hot. Dogs feel cold weather as well.

  • You Relax Him

Here we have one of the most interesting explanations. When a dog is in this position, he can hear your heartbeat, your breathing and so much more. For him, this is all relaxing. You can try the same thing. Lay down on the stomach of the person you love. You will notice or you already know how relaxing this all is. Some of you would be able to stay in this potion for days.

  • Showing Affection

Most dogs will want to show their affection at some point. Laying on your stomach is an excellent way to show that. Now you know why your pet is doing this.

Keep in mind that your pet will want you to cuddle and you can scratch him. All dogs love this and your is even ‘’telling’’ you that he wants it. In most cases, a dog who really wants to play and cuddle with you will do this. Sadly, this can mean that you didn’t spend a lot of time with your dog in recent times so you may want to correct that.

The Final Word

Why do dogs lay on your stomach? As you can see here, there are a few reasons why. In general, this is not bad behavior or something you need to correct as soon as possible. It can actually be a fun and appealing behavior that some owners will even want from their dogs. If your pet does this, you are a lucky person.
