Dogs have been using body language and certain traits to communicate with their owners. Basically, this means that when a dog does something, there is a reason behind it. Why do dogs lay near you or want to sleep near you? Your dog loves you but he will do this due to one or multiple reasons from below. These can help you understand your pet more.

Main Reasons Why Do Dogs Lay Near You

He Feels More Secure

Dogs who sleep or lay near their owners usually feel more secure there. They are pack animals hence they want to stay close to other pack members in order to be more protected. Why do dogs lay near you? They feel more secure and they love this feeling.

In the wild, dogs sleep and lay down together. This makes the entire pack stronger and more alert at any given moment. In this scenario, we can see that a dog will lay down near you when there are loud noises, thunderstorms or something similar.

This Will Get Him A Reward

Dogs are clever. They know that certain behaviors and actions will get them the reward they need. A reward can be belly rubbing, a treat, or something similar, something your pet loves. When he is close to you and he shows signs of affection, it is more likely that you will give him the reward he wants.

Keep in mind that you should always reward your pet when he does something you like. You must not reward him when he does something you don’t like or don’t approve of. If you make this mistake, you are basically encouraging negative behavior!

Your Dog Wants Something

He may want a treat, to pet him, or something similar. One way or another, he wants something and this action should tell you that. This is not a common reason but it is possible. Try to give your pet all the things you can imagine and monitor the result.

He Protects You

When he lays close to you he can protect you better and in less time than when he sleeps far away. Your dog will want to protect you from other people, animals, or anything similar. Usually, a dog will lay down close to you to protect you when other people or dogs are around.

Your Dog Is Affectionate

A dog may do this because he is affectionate. Some dog breeds are more affectionate than others. Golden Retrievers are the best example here. In general, he likes to lay there and he will need occasional petting in order to enjoy more.

Separation Anxiety

In the lack of simpler terms, your pet is acinous when you are not there. He will lay down next to you when you are preparing to leave or when you come home from work. To decrease the negative effect, try to exercise with him before you go. Make a safe and interesting place for him to stay when you are home. Take him outside to pee before you leave. Separation anxiety can be a huge issue for some dogs. If you live alone with your pet, daycare for dogs may be a better option than leaving him home alone.

Important Things You Should Consider

Here we have a few things you will need to consider. The first one is what happened so he started to lay down next to you. Maybe he had some traumatic experience so he is scared and he must always be close to you. Dogs who start this suddenly. Probably have realized that this will give them a reward hence they will want to do it at any given moment.

Consider what is different when he lays next to you. Maybe he wants to wake up as soon as possible before you take him outside for a walk. In general, consider the timing. If he lays down before you will feed him, now you know why.

What Should You Do About it?

Honestly, there is no need to do anything. Most dog owners like this and there are no huge downsides. It looks nice and it is appealing hence you may even want to train your pet to lay next to you. But if you don’t like this behavior you can change it.

The first thing you have to do is to ignore him and don’t reward him when he is next to you. Some dogs will understand the issue and they will stop doing this within a few days. This means that he only wanted the reward.

You can also train your pet to sleep in a different location. This will take time and there are a few things you need to do in order to make this training possible and successful.

  1. Make him a place where he will want to sleep. This must be comfortable and appealing to your pet.
  2. Try to encourage your pet by giving him a treat when he lays down on that spot.
  3. When he is standing on that spot, reward him.
  4. Repeat all these as long as your dog needs. In time, he will understand that being in that spot gets him rewards so he will want to stay there.

Don’t forget that in some cases separation anxiety is responsible. If this is the case with your pet, nothing from above will be effective. You may even need professional help in order to solve the problem and help your dog understand your lifestyle better and adapt sooner. These days, more dogs suffer from separation anxiety than you may believe.

The Final Word

Why do dogs lay near you or sleep close to you all the time? He wants something or he will get something from this action. A good thing here is that you don’t have to do anything about this. Many like this behavior. But, if you don’t like it, you can change it and the training is not as hard as you may believe.
