What are the most calm dog breeds? It’s not a secret that different breeds of dogs have different personalities. Golden retrievers are known to be super friendly and playful, whereas Chihuahuas are lively and loyal. And while all dogs are amazing, it’s good to know a bit about the breed you’re getting before you get it. Knowing its personality and domineering traits is essential because it will tell you whether it is the type of dog you want and will bond well with.

If you’re after a dog that’s more on the calm side because that’s what’s going to fit into your lifestyle a bit more, look no further. Here are some of the calmest and most peaceful breeds of dogs you might want to welcome to your home.

Top 8 Calmest Dog Breeds

Irish Wolfhound

While they may pretty large in size, this breed of dog has a gentle heart of gold. They’re incredible docile and sweet so they’re the perfect easy-going companion.

Their large size massively contradicts their personality as they’re not aggressive or territorial at all in character.

Shih Tzu

It’s an age-old and rubbish rumour that all small dogs are boisterous, noisy and demanding. While smaller breeds are more likely to become crazy without the proper training and care, this small breed is one of the calmest you can get.

Shih Tzu is pretty laid back and are able to adapt well to new environments. This means they might be the perfect breed for you if you’re living in an apartment or small home. They’re also really loving and relaxed in nature as well as loyal and, at times, a bit clingy. But when was that ever a bad thing with dogs?

Labrador Retrievers

Labrador retrievers are probably the most well known & calm breed of dogs around. They’re renowned for being loyal and super kind in nature. Labradors are incredibly affectionate and calm in nature so they make the perfect family dog if you have space for them because they’re excellent around young children.

They’re super gentle in nature and can be a bit lazy at times. This only ties in with their calm nature though! They’re also super easy to train and love a good long walk for a bit of exercise.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Here’s another little dog for those of you that don’t have the space to accommodate a big one.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a really low-maintenance breed that is super easy to take care of. They’re great around kids because they’re so laid back and are generally really adaptable and loving. A dog like this is perfect to have around young kids or if you’re a senior looking for a low maintenance companion.

St. Bernard

If you’re after a big dog with an even bigger heart, this is the breed to go for. You may have heard St. Bernard’s referred to as the gentle giant’ or the cuddly canine’ and those nicknames really hit the nail on the head.

They’re incredibly placid dogs that are really loving and loyal in nature so make the perfect companion. They’re also really friendly and tolerant and thereforedifficult to anger.

Greyhound

A greyhound is an amazing dog to have because while they’re calm and sweet in nature, they also have amazing personalities. Greyhounds are known to be quite quiet breeds but that doesn’t make them any less loving or gentle. They’re also incredibly intelligent animals.

If you’re after a greyhound, perhaps look into adopting a retired racing hound. It’s fantastic giving an older dog a bit of love after a life of hard work.

Great Danes

Great Danes are another dog breed of gentle giants that are also dopey, friendly and confident. They’re also incredibly loyal and devoted breeds that will always stick by your side. Don’t think you’re going to skip out on giving these beasts cuddles either, a fair few of them think they’re lap dogs!

They’re a great breed to have around in a family home, believe it or not. Their giant physique is just a facade because they’re super friendly and only ever get aggressive if they feel their territory or family are under threat.

Pugs

Pugs are a great calm and family breed too as they’re super relaxed in nature. While they can be a bit lively and sociable at times, they’re never too much to handle because they’re incredibly friendly. They can often be clingy too but in our eyes, that’s a good thing when it comes to dogs!
