Why Do Puppies Crying at Night? You are excited after bringing the sweet little puppy home. You try your best to be a good dog parent. From diet to hygiene, you keep everything under control. But then there is one thing that you can’t seem to do anything about. This is a puppy crying at night. You feel sad and helpless at the same time after hearing those little cries. You want this little bundle of fluff to sleep peacefully, but it is up at midnight and crying its heart out in the crate.

Why Do Puppies Cry At Night?

It’s heartbreaking to see and hear but let us tell you this is completely normal. Just think about it! This little friend was with his mum last night, all snuggled up, and today it is in the house it has never seen before. Puppies are a bit confused at the start when you bring them home. They are stressed due to the new environment, which they find hard to adjust to.

When puppies feel they are all alone at night, it is normal for them to cry and sob. They might also cry because they want to loo, but no one is around. Other reasons are that they might be feeling hungry or feeling unwell. Whatever the cause is, you need to soothe them down so they can sleep peacefully.

Tips to Stop Puppy Crying At Night

Here are some tips to help your puppy get rid of crying habit at night.

Keep Puppy Active before Bed

When you bring a new pup, make sure you don’t follow a sedentary routine before bed. If you do so, it will make it hard for the puppy to sleep. Instead, keep the puppy active and running before bedtime, which tires him out. In these cases, it will sleep quickly and peacefully without waking up whining at midnight, as the pup won’t be left with any energy to do so.

Do Not Feed Right before Bed

Do not feed your pup at least one hour before bed. If you feed them right before bed, they will sleep with a full stomach. And there is a high probability that the pup will wake up at midnight to let it out. Thus limit the pup’s snacks and drinks after he had his dinner.

Crate Train the Puppy

As puppies adjust to a new home, you must make them feel attached to their sleeping place. This training is not as simple as you will leave them in the crate. Instead, you have to develop some positive association with their crate. You can do this by feeding it in the carte and giving treats when the pup enters the crate. This way pup will feel crate as a safe and happy place to stay.

Use Music to Help Puppy Fall Asleep

If your pup is up at midnight and crying continuously, you can put on music that will help the puppy calm down. According to animal experts, music can relieve a pup’s stress level, thus helping him to relax and fall asleep.

Follow a Sleeping Routine

Make your pup go to bed at the same place at the same time. Keep the environment the same every day. That means making sure the light is the same; no extra noise is coming. Be there when the puppy wakes up, as it will reassure them they are not alone.

Calm Down Puppy without Giving Unnecessary Attention

As a new pet owner, you might get swayed by the little crying sounds of the pup and try to calm them down by trying every means. If you are doing the same, stop!! Because puppy’s cry is a bit dramatic. There must be something troubling them, but they want attention more chances.

If you try to comfort them every time they cry, it will be a never-ending drama because now that naught ball knows that, you will give it the attention it wants. So instead of cuddling, keep their carte in your room to soothe them down. A little Shhh! sound can be comforting as well, and puppies count it as attention. Once they start sleeping peacefully, move the carte out of the room.

Check for Other Problems

If you have tested every tip mentioned above, the puppy still cries at night. This may be because of other reasons, so make sure to check for them. For example, check if the bedding is comfortable enough or not. The room is dark without any unnecessary light.

Also, check if the pup is injured or has any other symptoms. The tips above will show results in a few days, so be patient until then. But if the pup’s whining is still the same, then consult a vet because something else might be troubling your dog.

Why Don’t Puppies Cry During Daytime?

Pups usually cry when they wake up at midnight. This is because, during the day, they are busy playing and running around while you keep them accompanied. And when they wake up during the daytime after taking a nap, you are still there. But when they wake up at night, no one is around, which makes them anxious, and they end up crying.

What Should I Do to Help My Puppy at Midnight?

When your little bundle is up emitting pitiful yelps, make a quick observation of what could be the reason. If there are loud noises, close the door. If they have eaten just before bed, take them to the relief area. Close the curtains in case of excessive light.

If there is no problem like this, the puppy is afraid and needs a little soothing. So pat the pup and give a gentle shake. You can try shaking a can filled with marbles. This will stop a puppy from crying.

Things to Avoid When Puppy is Crying

Avoid following things if you want your pup to sleep peacefully at night.

  • Don’t rush to the caret instantly when the pup cries. This will give the pup the wrong idea that he cuddles when he cries.
  • Don’t let them sleep in your room for longer; otherwise, it will become a habit.
  • Don’t punish them for crying; it can stress them out.

Bottom Line

Puppies Crying at Night? Puppies are like newborns who need attention and care for the first few days. So if your pup cries at midnight, don’t worry because it is normal. You can try the tips above to help the puppy calm down and get trained to sleep alone at night.
