We all know that salmon is delicious and one of the best foods for humans. And if you didn’t know, it is often included in commercial dog food. But is salmon good for dogs? Let’s get into it!

Is Salmon Good For Dogs?

Yes, salmon is good for dogs if it is served properly. Believe it or not, most fish that are good for humans are also beneficial for dogs. Salmon has many health benefits for dogs. Of course, there are still a lot of things you should know, and we will explain all of them below.

Salmon: Health Benefits For Dogs

Salmon is a saltwater fish that can be found in Alaska, around the coast of California, and in the Pacific Northwest. It is related to whitefish and trout, among many other fish. Salmon is one of the most commonly consumed fish around the globe, and most people love eating this fish on a weekly basis. As such, it is just a matter of time before a dog owner will want to feed his dog salmon. But first, is salmon good for dogs?

Salmon is known for the countless health benefits it has to offer. It is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid and eicosatetraenoic acid. These are well-known for offering great health benefits to humans and dogs. So, if you are planning to feed your pet salmon, here are a few benefits you can expect:

  • The regulated immune system of your dog.
  • Helpful for arthritis due to the fact salmon decreases inflammation.
  • Prevents certain skin allergies.
  • Better skin health and coat health.
  • High production of collagen.
  • Helpful with Inflammatory Bowel disease.
  • Boosts brain development in fetuses in a dog.
  • Decreases blood pressure and protects the heart.
  • Decreases the growth of cancer cells.
  • Beneficial for kidney disease and similar issues in dogs.
  • Helps with joint issues in older dogs.
  • Better cognitive function in senior dogs.

Salmon meat is rich in vitamins such as B, D, and A.

It contains minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and potassium. These are just a few of the ingredients we all need, and our dogs need them as well. It’s no wonder why salmon is one of the most appealing fish to eat around the globe and one of the most delicious.

In a nutshell, salmon is not something a dog owner should avoid. It is something he should share with his dog. The perks or better said health benefits are impressive and most dogs will get these.

Is Salmon Good For Dogs

Known Risks

Not everything is white in this case scenario. Feeding your dog with salmon which wasn’t prepared properly can cause a severe issue. It is a nice thing to ask your veterinarian about the details if you are worried.

The first and the most important thing to know is that you must never feed your dog with uncooked salmon. It is known to contain various parasites and bacteria such as Neorickettsia helminthoeca. These will infect your dog and they can be fatal. As such, raw salmon is a big thing to avoid. If your dog has salmon poisoning he will display one or more symptoms mentioned below.

  • Diarrhea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Fever.
  • Lethargy and weakness.
  • He will lose weight.
  • Discharge from his nose and eyes.
  • Dehydration.
  • Depression.
  • Swelling on his lymph nodes.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog after you fed him with salmon, take him to a vet immediately. The Sooner you get, the better odds your pet will have. Make sure that the vet knows you fed your dog with salmon. In most cases, diarrhea and vomiting come first but this isn’t a generic situation. You need to look at all the symptoms combined and make sure your dog doesn’t have a single one. Proper treatment is successful but only if you take your dog to a vet quickly.

Small Bones

Another thing to worry about is small bones. Salmon is loaded with these, and each one can cause a severe issue. If you want to make sure this doesn’t happen, remove all the bones. Yes, this is time-consuming and complicated, but it is also mandatory. It is the same case as with all other fish.

The ideal daily serving of salmon for your dog should be 100 grammes per 10 pounds. This means that for every 10 pounds of your dog’s weight, you should give him 100 grammes of salmon meat. Ideally, you will feed your dog this type of food once per week. It is enough to get all the health benefits, but there will be no risks. It is also expensive in some parts of the world, and there is no need to feed him more frequently.

Preparing Salmon For Your Dog

The preparation of salmon depends on you. You can grill it, steam, roast, or anything else you like. But you must not use onions, garlic, oils, paper, salt, or seasoning. Most dog owners know that not the main meal is problematic for their dogs but spices and additions to the main meal! You can also order a prepared salmon meal for your dog. These are different from the salmon prepared for humans, and they are a rare option. However, it might be available in your area, and you can use it.

Always opt for fresh salmon. Some dogs won’t even eat salmon that’s been in the fridge for a long period of time. The best thing you can do is make a small piece of salmon when you are preparing this meal for yourself.

Prepare it plain and without any additions, and feed your dog with it. If he likes it, you have found the ideal recipe. If he doesn’t, then you will have to try a different approach. Luckily, there are a lot of options out there, and you can always find a recipe that will work perfectly for your pet.

The Final Word

Still wondering if salmon is good for dogs? As you were able to see here, it is safe, beneficial, and extremely healthy meat your dog will enjoy. There are a lot of health benefits that make a massive difference and can help your dog enjoy his life more. Reparation and moderation are key elements to remember here today.
