Dog owners always want to know how long their particular dog breed is going to live. Today we have one question that has been very common: how long do Pomeranians live? Let’s get started!

How Long Do Pomeranians Live?

On average, these dogs will live 12.8 years. In general, their lifespan is between 12 and 16 years, but many individuals can live even longer. Anyway, below, we will take a look at health issues that affect lifespan and what you can do about them.

Main Issues That Affect Pomeranians’ Lifespan

All dog breeds have certain health issues that will affect their lifespan. Pomeranians are not different. In order to understand the question, you need to know all about these issues. How long do Pomeranians live? What affects their lifespan? Here we will discuss all the main issues.

An interesting fact is that trauma is the leading cause of death among puppies of this breed. Another fact we would like to share is that the same problem affects all toy breeds out there. After all, they are small and delicate.

When it comes to adult dogs, there are three main causes of death. These are:

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal problems that affect this dog breed are IBD, EPI, intestinal obstruction, pancreatic, and a few more. These are responsible for over 15% of the deaths among the Pomeranians. Yes, these are severe issues, and they need to be diagnosed as early as possible.

Trauma

Over 13% of Pomeranians will lose their lives as a result of trauma. This can be as simple as stepping on the dog or a car accident. Being hit by a car is another issue here that is common. As we have mentioned, trauma is the leading cause of death among puppies.

Infection

Pomeranians are affected by infections as well. As a matter of fact, 8.6% of dogs die due to this cause. The most common issues here are protozoal disease, leptospirosis, parvovirus, and a few more. They are extremely sensitive to infections carried by ticks, so make sure to pay close attention to this.

Pomeranians are definitely an interesting dog breed. For instance, they are far more resilient to cancer than other dogs. For example, golden retrievers develop cancer more than any other breed. Over 60% of dogs develop cancer at some point. Pomeranians are different. Only 7.9% will die due to cancer!

At this point, we can add that miniature pomeranians live shorter lives than ordinary pomeranians. They have a weaker immune system, lower bone density, and are more susceptible to injuries.

Additional Factors That Affect Pomeranians

All of the things you were able to see earlier are the most common and the most severe. However, there is a second part to the story. Here we will discuss other factors that do affect the lifespan of Pomeranians as well. As an owner, you will definitely want to check this section as well and get a better idea of what to expect or how to protect your pet.

All small dog breeds live longer than bigger ones. Pomeranians are a small dog breed; hence, they live longer than bigger dogs. On average, they will live 1.5 times longer than, let’s say, a boxer! Experts claim that this happens due to the fact that their bodies are small, so their organs can work slower to maintain all the processes. Female dogs live longer than males. On average, they live 1.2 years longer.

Here we can see two main factors that also have a huge effect on the lifespan of Pomeranians. The first one is genetics. Dogs who have predispositions to develop one or two diseases we have talked about will live shorter. Those who are 100% healthy will live longer. Dogs who were vaccinated will live longer than those who never got a vaccine. This is extremely important with all dogs, but especially with Pomeranians. Always make sure your dog gets the vaccines needed.

How Can Your Pomeranian Live Longer?

Luckily, there are a few things you can do in order to help your pet live as long as possible. Below are all the things you can do that have been proven to work perfectly.

  • Balance the exercising

Pomeranians are a small dog breed, so they are not ideal for jogging all day. In reality, an owner has to adjust the exercise. An ideal time is 40 minutes per day of walking and playing. You can play fetch, for instance. Avoid extreme exercise.

  • Neutering and spaying

This has been proven to prolong the lifespan of any dog, and in this case, we can see the same thing. Pomeranians who are spayed or neutered live longer than those who aren’t.

  • Clean food, food, and living conditions

If you recall, we mentioned that Pomeranians are extremely sensitive when it comes to infections. That’s why a clean living environment, clean water, and food are more important than with any other dog breed. Make sure that you are giving your pet clean, filtered water. Unfiltered water will contain bacteria and toxins that are harmful to these small dogs.

  • Decrease stress as much as possible

Pomeranians do not like stress. Nobody does, but they are extremely sensitive when it comes to stress. Try to eliminate it from your life as much as possible. Also, avoid smoking in front of your Pomeranian. Smoke does affect their lifespan, as with any other animal. This dog breed prefers casual and cheerful households, so make sure you provide one for your pet.

  • Regular vaccinations

This is another thing we have mentioned earlier. Dogs who get vaccines will live longer than those who don’t. This is common among Pomeranians. Always make sure he got all the vaccines, and you will feel much safer.

Conclusion

How long do Pomeranians live? We believe that now you know a complete answer to the question will all the facts be answered. With a lot of effort and a bit of luck, your dog can live over 16 years. This means that you two will be friends for a long period of time.
