There are two sides to this story. Some believe that essential oils are a huge problem for pets and you must never use them. Others claim that they have helped their dogs so much that they are recommending them now to us all. One way or another, it is your choice. Here we will discuss essential oils for dog allergies. We will reveal 6 essential oils that you can use and how you will have to use them! This is more important than you may believe.

How To Use Essential Oils On Dogs

Keep in mind that using pure essential oil is not wise. These are highly concentrated substances so they can cause a lot of problems. Instead, you will have to use therapeutic essential oils only. Never use one that has been sitting in your kitchen for weeks or months. Essential oils dog allergies topic is far from simple. The first thing you need to know is how to use these oils. There are 3 options.

  • Spray Form

You will mix the essential oil with water or olive oil and put it in the spray bottle. Now you can spray it on the fur of your dog. This is ideal when you want to help him get rid of fleas or similar issues.

  • Diffusers

You will pour essential oil into the device that heats it up. It will start to evaporate and a dog can inhale it. This is one of the most recommended options most dog owners want to use.

  • Topically

You will have to rub the essential oil on the dog. You can rub it on the fur, wound or etc. It is mandatory to add that in this case scenario you must dilute the essential oil using olive oil or glycerin. This is mandatory in order to decrease the potency of the essential oil which can be very high.

6 Essential Oils For Dog Allergies

As you may know already, there are countless essential oils out there. You can even make or find mixtures easily. But, not all of them can help your dog. As a matter of fact, most essential oils are bad or even toxic for dogs. That’s why you need to use one of these 6.

  • Elemi

This essential oil is very beneficial for dogs. It has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and also anti-infection properties. You will apply it topically only.

  • Roman Chamomile

An interesting fact is that this essential oil has anti-parasite properties. It also offers anti-inflammatory and anti-infection benefits. You will apply it orally or topically.

  • Myrrh

Probably the rarest essential oil on our list and the one many of you don’t know exists. You can use it for antiseptic properties, anti-inflammatory benefits, and anti-infection perks. It can be used topically only.

  • Peppermint

  • Lavender

  • Mountain Savory

You can apply it topically or use it in the diffuser and get all kinds of perks. The essential oil is beneficial when it comes to the immune system of your pet and can help with allergies and even prevent some.

Potential Risks

We must say something about the risks present here. For the lack of a better word, essential oils can be dangerous for dogs. The first reason is due to a high concentration of compounds in the oils.

Secondly, some of them are toxic to dogs. If you apply them to the skin directly, they may irritate the skin. All essential oils can and will be dangerous if your dog drinks them. These chemicals are quickly absorbed by the body so they can cause poisoning and a lot of other problems. Some can even be deadly.

Keep in mind that you may need proper, professional help if you want to use essential oils and help your dog with allergies. This is not easy to find these days. If you really like this option, then you may want to ask your vet about the details, precautions, and how to use that specific essential oil.

Don’t forget that dogs who suffer from specific conditions or diseases may react differently when you give them essential oils. There is no way to generalize this so be careful and always start with the smallest amount possible. If you notice any side effects, stop immediately, and take him to a vet.

Last but not least, there is no scientific research that essential oils help dogs. There is some research and it looks promising but there are not a lot of facts and actual data. Vets usually don’t recommend the use of essential oils so you can deduce better about this issue.

If you use essential oils to treat a massive allergy, it is a mistake. Most of these can be used as preventive methods and they don’t have the ‘’strength’’ of medications. If your pet has a serious allergy to something, you still have to take him to a vet and help him get professional treatment and medications.

Essential Oils Dog Allergies Wrap Up

If you believe in essential oils, you can try some of them on your dog. Essential oils dog allergies issue is not well-researched so you can’t find a lot of data. But you can stay safe if you follow these guidelines and these points. The most important thing here is to use only the essential oils we have here! Many others can be toxic and can seriously hurt your pet. As such, do not use them.
