Some of you will believe that dogs come from wolves. Others (who believe in newer research) will claim that the domesticated dogs come from wolves’ relatives. One way or another, today we have dog breeds like wolf that are stunning in the lack of a better word. Newbies can easily make a mistake and think that you are walking a wolf. In reality, you have a dog who looks like one. Below are dog breeds that look like real wolves.

8 Dog Breeds Like Wolf

1. Kugsha

Kugsha or as some of you know these dogs, Amerindian malamutes look like a real wolf. They are one of dog breeds like wolf with an impressive level of similarity! This is a hybrid dog breed. The origin is confusing. There are a lot of theories about how this breed came to life but none of them is 100% accurate. We do know that this breed has a lot of similarities to Siberian Husky. Both breeds are very active, love to run, and have stamina. These are also independent dogs and have an assertive personality.

When it comes to similarity to a wolf, it is stunning. Kugsha dogs have similar, almost identical colors of the coat, similar heads, ears, and tails. Unless you are familiar with the breed, you will think this is a wolf.

2. Saarloos Wolfdog

Saarloos Wolfdog has a name that is ideal in this scenario. This breed has been with us since the 30s. It is a hybrid breed meaning that one parent was a wolf while the second one was a German Shepherd. They have a lot of similarities to wolves. Visual resemblance is massive.

These dogs look like smaller and skinnier wolves. But they also have facial expressions that are almost identical to wolves. They are smart but they are not that interested in pleasing their owners. This is something we can see with all dog breeds that are related to wolves.

3. Siberian Husky

Obviously, we must mention Siberian Husky on the list. These dogs have tons of energy and honestly, not a lot of people can keep them in the house. Huskies love to run and they need around 90 minutes of physical activity per day. If you don’t have the time to provide that, choose another breed.

The fur, colors, and overall appearance are all like wolves. You can even find detailed comparisons online. Of course, Huskies are not wolves so there are a lot of differences. However, at first sight, these dogs do look like real wolves.

4. Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan Malamute looks like a wolf or like a husky, depending on how you look at him. In a nutshell, these are bigger dogs than Huskies. They are an old breed and they are great at pulling the sleds. The fur is more massive than a wolf has. Colors on the other hand are almost identical.

Once again we can see a dog who has plenty of energy. You need to provide him with exercises, walking and more if you want to keep one. Due to their size and energy, these dogs are not ideal to keep in a small apartment. They do love to play and they have great personalities.

5. Czechoslovakian Wolfdog

If you take a look at the name, you can understand a lot of the breed, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. They are bred in Czechoslovakia and they look like a wolf. The breed is ideal for the military and this was the primary reason for breeding. Today, we can see these dogs used for search and rescue and similar missions. They are easy to train and they love to work.

6. Northern Inuit Dog

The Northern Inuit Dog is created to look like a wolf. You can see the similarity. Their full name is Utonagan dog or Northern Inuit Dog. But, Utonagan means Northern Inuit which is interesting. The origin is not something we can reveal here. There are some details about it but most of them are not accurate or confusing. One of the more popular theories is that the breed came to life as a result of breeding German Shepherd, Malamute, and Siberian Husky.

This particular breed has been with us since the 80s. Even today they are rare dogs and you probably won’t see one. Those who had a chance to see one claim that the behavior is similar to a Husky.

7. German Shepherds

Of course, we will have German Shepherds on the list. Of them all, these dogs are best known for their connection with a wolf. Some look more like a wolf than others. For example, German Shepherds who have longer coats look more like a wolf. Some even have a jet-black coat. Some wolves have the same coat which makes this similarity even more impressive. The jet-black coats are extremely rare among German Shepherds and wolves.

German Shepherds love to shed. You will have to prepare for that. They are loving dogs who love the family and will do anything to protect it. If a German Shepherd fights another animal to protect his owner, he will never surrender!

8. Tamaskan

Tamaskan are rare dogs and not recognized by any of the breed registries. However, we can see a lot of clubs all over the world that love and are dedicated to this particular breed. These are hybrid dogs and their parents include Siberian Huskies and malamutes. There are some sources that claim other breeds are present here as well and also that wolves were used in breeding.

Personality is similar to a Husky. They have a lot of energy and they enjoy spending time with their families. Keep in mind that you must provide the ability to use that energy.

The Final Word

All these breeds are spectacular. Dog breeds like wolf are usually are with a few exceptions. We do know that most of the breeds are very smart, loaded with energy and they are great pets. If you want to have a dog who looks like a wolf and even acts like one sometimes, one of these breeds is the ideal choice.
