A dog acting strange looking around all the time? Why does he do this and what you should do about it? These are the most important questions here and we will have to answer them as soon as possible. This does happen and you need to know why. Keep in mind that you should record the date, time, and environment where the dog acts like this. This will help your vet determine the cause. Anyway, let’s see the reasons for this behavior.

Reasons Your Dog Acting Strange Looking Around

Head Injury

A dog acting strange looking around is not normal, in most situations. This means that there is a problem usually in the head. Head trauma can cause this problem. Your pet may suffer from nystagmus, lack of balance, issuers with coordination and so much more. In a nutshell, the circuits in the brain will be damaged. They will cause a lot of issues and looking around or being confused is one of them.

You will have to take him to a vet as soon as possible. He needs to complete an X-ray and determine the damage. Treatment is going to help your pet. Remember that this can be a long and complicated treatment! Just because you didn’t see a dog hitting his head, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have head trauma.

Dementia

Sadly, dogs can suffer from dementia or canine cognitive dysfunction if you prefer. Your pet will look for something inside the house. He will look confused and he won’t know what to do. He will also fail to recognize places and people. There is no treatment for this disease. It is related to age, meaning older dogs can suffer from it. Luckily it is not very common.

The only thing you can do here is to play and spend more time with your pet. You will help him keep his cognitive functions in better or at least average condition. Some owners use treat dispensing bowls and toys to exercise the mind of a dog. This can help.

Nystagmus

Nystagmus means unintentional eye movement. In other terms, your pet will move his eyes without knowing or wanting to do that. Vestibular disease and head trauma can cause this issue. Your pet will have other symptoms to show as well. These include head tilting, walking in a circle, nausea, and lack of coordination. Nystagmus is more common in older dogs.

Vestibular Disease

Vestibular disease attracts the vestibular system, present in the brain and the ear. It helps your dog have balance. The tumors, traumas and so much more can have a negative effect on this system and cause a lack of coordination, confusion, and staring around all the time. There are many types of this disease and there are many variations. We also know that it can be idiopathic meaning it will occur with age and it can be congenital, starting at birth.

A vet must complete an X-ray, blood test, and urine test. If the issue is more complex, he will also need CT and MRI scans. Sedatives can help. If the infection is the cause, a vet will prescribe antibiotics.

He Hears Something

Yes, this is possible. Dogs have more sensitive hearing than people. They can hear things when we can’t. As such, he will look around the room. There is nothing wrong with this and you don’t have to do anything about it. Once the sound ends, his behavior will return to normal.

Drugs or THC

If a dog eats some drug that is designed for people or marijuana (contains THC) he will behave strangely. You can see him looking around the room all the time. He will vomit, have diarrhea, and have ‘’big eyes’’. We can say that your pet is high. However, dogs don’t process THC as humans do, so this would be a difficult difference to explain.

All you have to know is that your pet will act weirdly due to drug intoxication. Other medications such as Xanax and NyQuil can cause this as well. Even eye drops can cause this!

Hallucinations

Here we have an interesting and a bit confusing reason to explain. A dog can look around because he believes that something is there. This happens due to hallucinations. Now, these are not the cause but the symptoms. Heluations can occur due to all sorts of diseases, issues, and more. For instance, Fly-Snapping Syndrome can cause hallucinations.

Seizures can cause them as well. You must take him to a vet and he must determine the cause. Once done, he will need to prescribe a treatment. You can see that many causes of hallucinations are here, on this list.

Fly-Snapping syndrome

This is another hard to explain reason. It means that a dog will look around and snap and try to bite something that is not there. It is extremely rare and pods are high that you will never see a dog with Fly-Snapping syndrome. Your pet may show this all the time or occasionally or even extremely rare. There are a lot of cases of this syndrome.

For example, neurological disorders can cause the syndrome. Eye substances can cause it as well. The obsessive-compulsive disorder also causes it. The first thing you must do is to take him to a vet. He must determine the cause and if possible, start a treatment.

Fear

Fear can do a lot of things to your dog. Making him act weird and staring is one of them. He can look around all the time because he thinks something will come out and attack him. You never know what he thinks is there. Loud noises, other dogs, and people are usually the first thing we will think of.

The Final Word

A dog acting strange looking around occasionally or every single day is not a problem. This is a symptom of something. As a good owner, you need to help your dog. You need to understand why this happens and you need to start a treatment. Usually, this means you will have to take him to a vet. Also, it means that treatment is mandatory.
