Here is one of the questions most dog owners have been asking. Can dogs understand music? We know that most of you will say yes. Some may even say that their dogs have been singing (howling or barking) when they hear their favorite song. Is this true? Well, the answer will be loaded with details so let’s start.

Dogs Will Hear, React, And Associate Music With Certain Things

Yes, all dogs will hear music. They are not deaf. They will not understand the music which is obvious. They don’t speak our language and they cannot memorize it. There is no need to add that dogs will not care nor focus on the tempo, and genre of the music. To them, it can be pleasant or not. For instance, calm music is something most dogs will like. Loud heavy metal will be bad for them. They can be scared of loud music in general.

Dogs will link the song or music with good things. If you give food or any treat to a dog and there is a specific song in the background, they will link the two. The next time when they hear that song, they will believe that it is time for a treat. This is why some dogs will become happy when a certain song is on the radio or your computer. Even if a dog sleeps, and hears that song, he would erect his ears and listen to the music. He does this due to the link we have here.

Always remember that loud music is not appealing to dogs. They don’t like it. They don’t like thunderstorms or fireworks either. Gentle and slow-tempo music is another thing and is usually a more appealing option.

Dogs Don’t Like Heavy Metal Music

It sounds like a weird thing to say but there have been a lot of studies that proved the claim. Dogs don’t react well when they hear loud heavy metal music. It sounds too rough and scary. They don’t feel comfortable and you can see dogs leaving the room. Some will become anxious while others will look terrified.

Classical music is different. Dogs usually love it and they will enjoy great compositing. Don’t expect that your dog will become extremely happy or do something impressive, but he will be calm and he will enjoy more than usual. You can use this type of music when youwant to train a dog or when you want to give him something nice. This can make the event better and more appealing to the dog.

An interesting fact here is that pop music has almost no effect on dogs. Most dogs will not even pay attention to it. This applies to all other genres. Dogs like classical music only and they don’t like heavy metal. It probably has to do something with the noise, tempo, and how music can make the dog feel. Heavy metal canmake him feel anxious while classical music can make him feel relaxed.

You Can Train Your Dog To React To A Song

Believe it or not, you can train a dog to react when he hears a specific song. Some dog owners were even capable of teaching their dog to dance or react in an interesting way when a specific song is on the radio.

One thing you can do is to play with your dog and be happy when that song is played. You can give him treats as well. A dog will be happy because you are and he is getting a treat. This means that the next time when he hears that song he will start acting happy and move around the house. This is basically how you can teach your dog to react to a song or music. You may need a lot of time for this but you will manage.

You can even teach him to do something when the song is on the radio. To do that you will issue a command every single time when he hears the song. Repeat the process and reward him well when he obeys you. Soon, he will start doing the same thing every single time when he hears the song.

The Final Word

Can dogs understand music? They can’t understand music.  On the other hand, we can see that dogs can hear music and it will affect their emotions.

Proper music can make them happier. Certain music can make themfeel anxious. If you want to train your dog to react when a specific song is played, you can. You will need a lot of time and effort but you will do it and you will have a special dog.
