For the last couple of decades, people have believed that all dogs are color blind. They can see in black and white only. Are dogs color blind or is this a myth? The real situation is a bit different. Yes, they are color blind but they don’t see in black and white. As always, we are going to explain the topic and reveal all the facts you need to know.

Color Blindness: Specifics

First of all, you need to know what color blindness is. All of this started in the 18th century when scientist John Dalton noticed that his brother can’t really see all the colors. His experiments were essential. Are dogs color blind? Try to understand what this means first.

8% of men in Northern Europe have a problem detecting red-green colors. Cones that are in the retina, will detect colors. They will transfer the colors into impulses and they will go to the brain via the optic nerve. Humans have three types of these cones. Dogs have two by the way.

People who have problems or abnormalities with the cones can be color blind. Keep in mind that these people can still see some of the colors. For instance, they can see blue and yellow but can’t see red or greed. A red object will be brown to them. Others can’t distinguish between yellow or blue colors.

Dogs Are Color Blind

Well, here is the answer. All dogs are color blind (dichromatic). This means that they can’t really see green or red colors. They can still see yellow, blue, and the combination of these two colors. For lack of a better word, the vision of dogs is like a person who is color blind. Red objects are dark brown to them.

Dogs can see objects that are blue or a different shade of color. They can also see blue-green variations. They can see yellow objects as well. But all the things that are green or red will look like a brown color or grayscale. In general, their vision is pale and not as precise as ours. This all changes at night which is obvious. Dogs understand this and this type of vision is normal to them. They certainly had a lot of time to accept it.

Here you can also see that dogs don’t see in black and white only. They can see some of the colors which help them navigate and move around. The ultimate answer here is that all dogs are color blind but the theory that they can see black and white only is a myth. Now you know the truth so you can understand your pet better. Still, you should buy him colorful toys and react normally.

Why Are Dogs Color Blind?

Now we will have to explain why all dogs are color blind. This is due to evolution. Dogs were wild animals. They are predators and they used to hunt in the dark. Over time, their vision had to adapt. Dogs have a much bigger reflective membrane, lenses, and corneal surface. All of this means that they can see much better in the dark than humans. They also have far more rods than humans. This once again improves their vision in the dark.

We can say that dogs are color blind due to a reason. They need this type of vision. It serves them well and it is ideal in the dark. You probably have a dog who can see all kinds of things at night but you can’t. This is why he can do that.

An interesting fact is that some birds and fish are tetrachromatic. They have an additional fourth type of cones so they can see ultraviolet light. Most other animals can see as we can or as our dogs see. Mother Nature will always adjust all the senses according to where the animal lives and how it survives in the wild.

Which Colors Dogs Like The Most

Dogs like yellow and blue colors the most. This is not something they can choose. They see these colors the best and as such, it is much easier for them to tell the difference between the colors. So, if you believe that dogs are attracted to red color the most, you are wrong. They cannot even see the color red as we can. This also means that buying them toys in red color doesn’t make any sense.

If you want to buy your dog a toy and you want him to play with it, get him a yellow or a blue one. This is also a trick you can use while training your pet. Toys in these two colors are easier for your dog to see and he can find them and play with them more.

Keep in mind that when you play fetch with your dog, he will experience satisfaction when he finds the thing. If you play with a red toy, he is less likely to see it well or he cannot find it easily. As such, a dog may end up frustrated and even sad. A blue or yellow toy would solve this issue and change the situation completely.

Dogs don’t have a well-developed sense of sight because they have a sense of smell. It is 10.000 times stronger than we humans have and you can only imagine the potential. This sense is so strong that a dog is able to distinguish all the ingredients in the food separately. Now you know why he can eat something that is disgusting for us. He can smell something delicious in that food.

Is Your Dog Seeing Well?

Just because dogs see as they are, it doesn’t mean that they are blind or they cannot see well at all. As a matter of fact, it means that dogs can see decently and that they don’t have any problems with that. But, it is still possible that your dog doesn’t see well. Maybe he has some eyesight problem, infection, or an injury.

If your dog rubs his eyes all the time, he doesn’t see things so much that he hits them occasionally and he uses ear sight more and more, you may want to take him to a vet. He will perform tests and you will get your answer. Trying to do this at home is not always easy and you cannot be positive that your test was any good.

Eyes are sensitive to eye infections and are common in dogs. Watery eyes, a lot of eye boogers, and a dog rubbing his eyes are some of the most common signs. If you notice these, take your dog to a vet as soon as you can.

What All Of This Means?

All of this means that you should adapt to your pet better. The best example would be with toys. If you get a red toy for your pet, he will probably fail to see it or lose it. If you get him a yellow toy, he will be much happier and he will never lose it. In other words, you need to purchase toys that are more suitable for a dog. Blue and yellow toys are the best.

If you like or want to train your pet, getting him a yellow toy will be the best option. Now you can understand why dogs are crazy about tennis balls. They like to chase them and play with them all the time. On the other hand, they are not always interested in red balls. They have problems seeing the red ball hence it is not appealing to them.

Experts recommend that trainers should use yellow or blue toys. These are the easiest for a dog to see and they are the most effective for the overall progress. You should do the same thing. If you get him a red toy, you can see that occasionally he will run past it and fail to see it. This is due to color blindness and not because a pet is stubborn.

Sadly, the most popular toys for dogs these days are red or orange. Yes, they look nice but they are hard for dogs and they are not appealing. Dogs can’t easily see these toys and they will have a harder time with training. You will have a harder time as well which is an issue. A yellow or blue toy can solve that.

The Final Word

Are dogs color blind? Yes, they are. They can see yellow and blue (and a mixture of these two colors) but they can’t see red or green colors. Keep in mind that they don’t see in black and white only. They can still use some of the colors. All dogs see this because they need improved night vision in order to catch prey. Dogs are predators.
