There are a lot of foods out there that are safe, delicious, and can be shared with your dog. As a matter of fact, most foods are like this, so there is no need to worry if your dog eats some of them. Most of those foods are good for all dog breeds. Are avocados good for dogs as well? Well, this is a bit more complicated to explain, and we will do it in detail below.

Are Avocados Good For Dogs or Not?

Your dog can eat avocados, but this is not something you should feed him. Theoretically, a small amount of avocado will be harmless, but wait until you hear the full story.

Are avocados good for dogs? The answer is more complicated than you may believe. This is a type of food that is in style right now due to its countless health benefits. But it also contains persin, which is a toxin. It is dangerous for all animals, including dogs. Yes, dogs are more resilient to this toxin, but it is still dangerous. So the short answer is no, avocados are not good for your dog and you should not feed your pet with it!

Persin is found in the whole plant. It can be detected in leaves, fruit, skin, and even the flesh of the avocado. In the flesh of the fruit, it is detected in small amounts. However, it is still dangerous, and it is still something you should not share with your dog. If your dog eats a lot of it, he may start vomiting and have diarrhea. But, in more severe cases, myocardial damage may occur. In other words, this toxin can be fatal to your dog!

There are a few more issues with this fruit. It is high in fat content, which can cause issues with the digestive tract. It can also cause pancreatitis in some dogs. The latter occurs due to the fact that avocado is loaded with calories. There is also a large pit in the centre that can choke your dog. Last but not least is the fact that avocado will “help” your dog gain weight. In general, avocados are not food for dogs, and as such, they should be avoided at all costs.

You Must Keep Avocado Away From Your Dog

If you like eating avocados and you bring this fruit back home all the time, you need to take mandatory precautions in order to keep the fruit away from your pet. This means that you will have to keep it in a tall cabinet or some other place where your dog cannot reach it. They are delicious, and dogs know it. If they can, they will eat all the avocados in the house.

If you live with your family, you will want to print a list of dangerous foods and fruits and put it on the fridge. The goal is that all people can see which foods your dog must not consume. Let your friends know as well.

It is a good idea to invest in a dog-proof garbage bin. The skin of the avocado will end up there, and you don’t want your pet to eat it. As you should remember, the skin contains persin, the toxin that makes avocado a big no-no for your dog.

Can Your Dog Still Eat Avocado?

Avocado is a very healthy fruit, so most dog owners will want to feed it to their dogs. If you are one of them and you believe that avocado is a must, here is what you need to do.

Only Give Very Small Portions Of Avocado

A dog can eat a small portion of avocado every now and then. Keep the amounts as small as possible and do not feed him with the fruit every single day. Once a week is more than enough.

Feed Him With The Fruit Only

Do not give leaves, skin, or anything except the fruit itself. Look for the delicious flesh of the avocado and feed it to your pet in small amounts. Make sure to remove the pit. It has the ideal size for shocking your dog.

Do Not Mix It With Other Ingredients

Do not add spices or seasoning to the avocado. As a matter of fact, do not add anything and only give plain avocado to your pet. This is the safest way, at least when it comes to this particular fruit.

You can understand why some dog owners like feeding their dogs avocados. This is extremely rich in nutrient fruit and it has been known as a super food. So which nutrients are inside the fruit?

In general, avocado contains healthy fats and also a lot of fatty acids alongside other ingredients. Some of them include vitamins A, C, E, B6, B3, fiber, potassium, magnesium, amino acids, folate, antioxidants, and so much more. Honestly, we would need a howl page just to reveal all the healthy ingredients of avocado.

Folate, potassium, acids, and niacin are all essential for the health of your dog’s coat. These will keep it in pristine condition. Your dog will look younger. Vitamins are essential for proper fur, bone, eyesight, and the health of many other systems. It’s no wonder why so many people love avocado and enjoy eating it on a daily basis.

It also has a great taste, which makes all of these benefits even easier and more delicious to get. Keep in mind that this is just half of the story, and that story is explained above at the beginning.

The Final Word

Are avocados good for dogs, or are they something you should avoid? What do you think? Theoretically, they are very healthy, but they still contain toxins! Honestly, the idea of feeding your dog something that contains toxins doesn’t sound right. As such, we will not recommend avocados as ideal dog food, and we will recommend you avoid them at all costs.
