You may see a dog without a tail every now and then. You are wondering how and why this is possible. Yes, it is possible that the tail is surgically removed. But some breeds don’t have tails. Today we are going to talk about those breeds. They are interesting and they can be your next pet if you really want a dog that doesn’t have a tail.

7 Dog Breeds Without A Tail

1. Boston Terrier

These dogs will reach 25 pounds in weight and they have coats with black and white sections. Some people refer to this as a tuxedo and it really makes a dog look stunning. The Boston Terrier can be the best dog without a tail if you want a quiet pet.

They do need physical activity but not much. They don’t bark [a lot and in general, maintenance is at the lowest level possible. If you want to train one, you can. This is an easy process with this breed. In addition, these dogs are friendly to other dogs, animals, and especially children.

2. English Bulldog

The English Bulldog is one of the extremely popular dogs that don’t have a tail. These dogs come with muscles. They are medium-sized dogs and they have been with us for over 500 years. You can call the breed English Bulldog or just Bulldog. An interesting fact is that the breed originated as dogs who would hold the snout of a bull to the ground. They were much bigger back then.

Today these are great pets. They can form astonishing relationships with children. They are also great when it comes to their owners. Physical activity is not mandatory. They need moderate levels only. Keep in mind that due to the shape of the snout they can have respiratory issues. You don’t want to run with one when the temperature is high or perform similar tasks.

3. Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog

This breed is very popular and interesting. A close relative is Queensland Heeler, hence Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is a Heeler as well. But while the relatives have a tail, this breed doesn’t. They are herd dogs and have been doing this since the 1830s in Australia. The coat has blue dots and it is thin. Ears are pointy which makes them look great.

These dogs are very protective and very active. This also means that you will have to provide a lot of physical activity if you want one. They are reserved when strangers are present. In addition, these are very helpful and pleasant dogs.

4. Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a dog breed that doesn’t have a tail. It is not a very common dog breed, especially outside the United Kingdom. Here we can see dogs that were very popular among royalty in the UK. The weight is up to 25 pounds and the head is fox-like.

Due to dwarfism, they can have a lot of health problems. Eye and hip problems are the most common of them all. Also, they can gain weight quickly. If you keep one or want one, make sure you take him to a vet on a regular basis. The checks are mandatory. These are great dogs and pets in general. They are smart, have a lot of energy and they love their owners.

5. Brittany  Spaniel

Brittany Spaniel is not the correct name for this dog. The new name is simply Brittany. Brittany Spaniel was an old name and it was common up to 1982. But, these dogs can flush birds, smaller animals and so much more hence they are not pure bird dogs. Therefore the name is new now.

Brittany dogs are very fast, energetic, and easy to train. As you can assume they need a lot of physical activity so you need to provide that to them if you want to keep one. The coat here is liver mixed with white or it can be orange mixed with white.

6. Braque du Bourbonnais

Braque du Bourbonnais is a bird dog (they are also called gun dogs) and their origin comes from the Renaissance. A while back the breed was close to extinction. The numbers were extremely low and survival was an issue. Today, the numbers are healthy, and almost there is no risk of extinction. The line we are looking at has been present since the 80s.

The coat is always white covered with black spots or you can see a peach coat that has orange color only. The energy level is impressive. After all, these dogs are ideal for hunting. But, Braque du Bourbonnais are calm dogs and can be interesting pets.

7. French Bulldog

The French Bulldog doesn’t have a tail. This is a combination between a French Terrier and English bulldog. The breed we have here is for pets only. These are not sports dogs which can make them ideal for some of you. The dogs are very muscular and have wrinkly coats. The coat is also loose which makes them stand out from the crowd. These dogs are prone to separation anxiety and need to spend a lot of time with their owners.

Other things we can reveal about the breed is that they don’t bark, they are very patient, and don’t need a lot of exercises. One of many facts here is that the dogs are very funny and some people even call these clowns. All we can say is that they are great pets to keep and they look amazing. Some of the health issues include allergies, issues with breathing, and poor ability to control body temperature.

The Final Word

A dog without a tail is not a common thing. As you can see there are a lot of dog breeds where the tail is not present. If you want to adopt one of these dogs make sure you understand his needs first. Some of these will require a lot of physical activity while others won’t. Each breed is different hence you need to know all about it before you can adopt a dog.
