Can your dog eat nuts, especially macadamia nuts? Almost all the owners who have a curious dog might have thought about this question at some point. How about adding some macadamia nuts to a batch of cookies to enhance the taste for dogs?

Macadamia nuts could be considered perfectly safe for humans, but are they safe for the consumption of dogs too? Today, we will tell you the answer to all these questions and more. Continue reading to find out more about can your dog can eat macadamia nuts.

Can Dogs Eat Macadamia Nuts?

The answer is No. Dogs cannot consume macadamia nuts at all. Macadamia nuts are one of the top human foods that dogs cannot ever consume. Not all human foods are safe for dogs. A few human foods cause severe issues if consumed by dogs. Macadamia and other toxic nuts such as walnuts and pecans are commonly found in almost all households and can be accidentally given to pet dogs without knowing the harmful effects these can cause.

According to studies, macadamia nuts are highly poisonous for canine consumption. What causes the toxicity is unknown as the same nuts do not have any adverse effects on cats. The symptoms of macadamia nut poisoning are severe but mostly not fatal.

These nuts, if ingested by dogs, can cause weakness and lethargy in your canine. In some cases, dogs even present symptoms like tremors, vomiting and fever. These symptoms of macadamia poisoning typically resolve within 48 hours; however, if you notice your dog has ingested the nuts, it is best to take your pet to the vet as soon as possible.

Why Are Macadamia Nuts Not Safe For Dogs?

Now that we are aware that macadamia nuts can be highly poisonous for dogs, the reason behind macadamia food poisoning is not yet known. Although humans and cats can easily eat macadamia nuts without any issue, the reason for macadamia nut poisoning is not known.

What is known is that a tiny amount of macadamia nuts would make your dog fall severely ill.  A quantity of macadamia nuts, as small as one-tenth of one ounce, could trigger poisoning symptoms in the dogs.

Macadamia Nut Poisoning Symptoms in Dogs

Suppose you aren’t aware that your dog accidentally devoured some macadamia nuts, what would you do to find it out? Better to watch out for a few symptoms that we will share now. Some of the symptoms of macadamia nut poisoning include weakness, back legs collapsing, vomiting, lethargy, high fever, tremors and uncoordinated movement of the muscles.

The good news is that macadamia nut poisoning isn’t fatal.  However, the severe symptoms take about two days on average to resolve. The weakness may last for a little longer, but with care and proper treatment, your dog will recover soon.

Since macadamia nut poisoning is scary for dogs, keeping anything containing these nuts away from them is best. Always read labels. Sometimes the nuts are mixed in chocolates or cookies that we might accidentally offer to our pet dogs. Chocolate and raisins should also be avoided to be given to dogs as they are also poisonous, rather fatal in some cases.

How to Diagnose Macadamia Nut Poisoning in Dogs

For the correct diagnosis of macadamia nuts in dogs, there must be a history of macadamia nut ingestion or symptoms that shows the poisoning. If you didn’t yourself witness your dog chewing in the nuts, but you suspect it, it is better to look for the traces of the nuts in the dog’s stool.

Other than the symptoms mentioned above, macadamia nut poisoning can be accurately diagnosed by observing a rise in serum lipase activity shown in a blood test. Signs of hyperthermia (fever or temperature higher than the average body temperature) and muscle weakness are obvious symptoms and point to macadamia nut poisoning in dogs.

Treatment Options for Macadamia Nut Poisoning

If your dog has accidentally consumed macadamia nuts, take him to the vet ASAP. The vet will induce vomiting in cases of recent food poisoning and will be given activated charcoal to further reduce the stomach’s absorption.

Medication like sorbitol will help induce bowel movements to eliminate any traces of nuts faster. Other medicines might be given to your pet dog to help in lowering the fever and making him more comfortable.

In case more significant amounts of macadamia nuts being ingested, the vet might require keeping the dog for 48 hours to monitor him for the symptoms. The treatment plan could become aggressive if chocolates and raisins are ingested as well.

Tips To Keep Your Dog Safe From Eating Macadamia Nuts

As far as keeping toxic foods away from the dogs is concerned, prevention is the key. If you have a dog that has adventurous nature and is down to eating almost anything, you might need some tips to keep macadamia nuts away from your dogs.

We have chalked down a few ways that can help you in keeping macadamia nuts and other toxic human foods away from your adventurous and curious dogs. With these tips, you can easily help in keeping your dogs away from ingesting harmful and toxic foods.

  • Don’t give your dogs any foods that contain traces of nuts and raisins. Especially macadamia nuts.
  • Look at the labels before offering a snack to your dog.
  • Hide all the foods that contain harmful ingredients, keep them away from the reach of your dogs to rule out chances of accidents.
  • Store all the nuts on a shelf at height,
  • If you discard anything containing these nuts at all, be careful to dump it in a place that isn’t reachable to the dogs.

Final Words

Your dogs can have limited quantities of almonds, cashew nuts, and peanuts. Walnuts and pecans are not preferable for dogs as they can cause molds making the dogs ill. I  hope this information helps!
