You may have a dog who likes to sploot all the time. Now you want to know is this normal behavior and why he does this. Why do dogs sploot? There are a few reasons only and you will see how interesting these are. Below we are going to explain all the facts you need to know about this behavior and you will understand it completely in a matter of seconds.

Why Do Dogs Sploot?

Now you may believe that there are countless reasons why a dog will do this. You may even believe that there is some important benefit of this position. In reality, there are no such things.

The first thing here is the fact that smaller dog breeds are more flexible so they can sploot all the time and they can enjoy this position more often. This refers to chihuahuas and corgis. In fact, these two breeds are best known for sploot. Some other dog breeds are unable to enjoy this position or they cannot even make it.

Most dogs can do this because it feels nice. It is a stretching movement basically so you can imagine how nice it feels and how appealing it is to a dog. He may stay in this potion for a couple of minutes only, just like you when you are stretching. Dogs who enjoy this will do it all the time due to obvious reasons.

A second reason here is to cool down. You can see some dogs doing this in the summer when the temperature is high. They will sploot so the stomach will touch the floor which is usually cooler. Don’t do this to heat the stomach up.

There are no additional reasons why a dog will do this. In general, they either do it because they love it or they want to cool themselves down. Either way, it looks great and funny. We can see countless photos of dogs doing this on the web. In addition, younger and more flexible dogs are more prone to doing this. Older dogs are not that flexible so they may avoid this position.

What Is Splooting?

Splooting is an interesting position or posture for any dog. We must add that these animals do this more commonly, but other animals may do it as well, especially cats. Splooting means that your dog will lie down on his stomach and push his rear legs back.

It is important to add that there are three types or variations of splooting. They all have the same base, but they look different. Before you know why to do dogsploot, you need to know all about these variations, which will be explained in this section.

Why Do Dogs Sploot

Variations of Slpooting

  • Classic Splooting

This is the most common type. You will see your dog with one leg below the stomach while the other is pushed all the way back. Most dogs do this at some point, and it looks funny and like the dog is stretching.

  • Side Splooting

For this type, you will see that your dog is lying down on the floor. He will push one leg on the left or right side while the other leg is beneath the stomach. Dogs won’t do this while they are standing.

  • Complete Sploot

This is the most appealing splashing we can see. It means that both of the legs will be stretched fully back on a dog while his front legs are pushed forward. He will be on his stomach in this position.

Your pet will likely show all variations of splooting, and you can tell a difference now. For him, a suitable splooting position will depend on the reason why he is doing that. Below, we will cover those reasons. For lack of a better word, all three variations are appealing.

They look great, and they make your pet look more like a human. Some people believe that dogs do this to imitate humans, but this isn’t the case. They have their own reasons why they are splooting all the time.

It is important to add that which position or type of spitting a dog uses will depend on the breed. Some breeds do this more often while others do it rarely. It also depends on the flexibility and age of the dog, which will be explained in detail below.

One way or another, all dogs will sploot at some point, and it may be the ultimate photo you will want to take. Keep your phone’s camera ready.

One interesting question we may have is why this position is called “splooting.” It comes from the word “sploot,” obviously, and it is onomatopoeia (animal-based). It simply appeared on the web a while back, and after that, all dog owners started using it.

Nevertheless, it is a common term today but not well known to all dog owners. Thanks to us, now you know the full story and the complete picture of the position and the meaning.

Is Splooting Safe?

Yes, it is 100% safe and there is no need to worry about it. Dogs who can do it will do it and they will enjoy it. The ones who cannot make this position will not do it hence there is no risk of any issues. Don’t worry if you see your pet in this position all the time. He likes it and he knows that he can enjoy it. When you take him outside and the temperature is low, he will not enjoy this position. His stomach will touch the cold ground so he doesn’t like that.

Of course, there is no need to change this behavior or affect it in any way imaginable. If your pet likes splooting, he should do it whenever he wants. It even looks funny when some dog breeds do this so it can be an action that will put a smile on your face.

The Final Word

As you were able to see, this is an acceptable and appealing thing some dogs do. Why do dogs sploot? They like the feeling or they want to cool themselves down. Your dog may do this all the time or he may do this occasionally. It is up to him. All you need to know is that it is acceptable behavior and you don’t need to worry about it. There is no need to take him to a vet or try to change this behavior.
