Dogs don’t live as long as humans. As such, many potential owners will consider the lifespan of a dog bred before they adopt a pet. How long do collies live? Well, there are a few things you need to know and we will explain all these below. Let’s just say that if you want to adopt one, you should. These are smart, obedient dogs that are great pets as well.

How Long Do Collies Live?

Here we will have to start with a few basic information and also the main part of the answer. In general, these dogs live long. They have a very long lifespan for a dog and are constantly on the list of dog breeds with the longest lifespans. How long do collies live? Let’s find out together.

Rough collie

They have long coats and they are medium and large dogs in size. They live between 14 and 16 years. These dogs are very intelligent, active, loyal, and protective. In short words, these are some of the best pets you can find out there. Females can reach 25 kg while males are up to 30 kg in weight.

Smooth collie

These are herding dogs. They live between 12 and 15 years. Collies in general are not hypoallergenic dogs. Smooth collie comes from Scotland. They are social, alert, intelligent, and very easy to train dogs. Males can reach 30 kg while females are up to 25 kg in weight.

Border collie

Border collies will live between 10 and 17 years. As you can see, they can live longer if they are treated well. Once again, these are intelligent, loyal, athletic, and active dogs. Males will reach 20 kg while females can be up to 20 kg of weight. Because these are athletic dogs, they do need a lot of physical activity. An interesting fact is that a dog of this breed, Bramble, lived 28 years. This dog lived in the United Kingdom.

Potential Health Issues

Collies, especially border collies are generally healthy dogs. But, they can suffer from certain health issues. Here we will discuss the most common issues that affect this breed.

Collie eye

This issue affects collies hence the name. It is a congenital issue meaning that the eyes don’t develop as they should. The issue affects retinas. If your dog has this, he can’t see well. Almost 90% of the collies are affected by this health issue.

PRA

It stands for Progressive Retinal Atrophy and it is another eye condition. It will destroy retinas and cause blindness. Dogs with PRA can’t see well in low-light conditions.

Epilepsy

This is another common problem of collies. There are two types. Regardless of which one a dog has, he will need treatment. You will need to contact your vet if your collie has seizures or issues with movements and behavior.

Hypothyroidism

When this happens, the thyroid glands will not produce enough hormones. Dogs with this problem have a slow metabolism and they don’t behave as healthy dogs. Sadly, this condition can cause a lot of other health problems in collies and other dogs.

Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia affects 12% of border collies. It means that the ball and the socket of the leg are not 100% compatible which can cause a lot of issues. Puppies of 5 months of age can develop hip dysplasia.

TNS

This is a deadly disease. You may know about it under the Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome name. In this case, the bone marrow will produce white blood cells but they will stay trapped inside the bone marrow. Dogs with TNS have a poor coat, poor health and they can’t move around well.

4 Things That Can Prolong The Lifespan Of Collies

Although we are writing about collies, you can use the same things to prolong the lifespan of all dogs. These are tips that are effective and work well but there is no guarantee that your dog will live as long as the breed and genetics allow it. Anyway, look at these 4 things and try to implement them into the life of your pet.

1. Proper Breeding

The first thing you will have to do is to adopt a puppy from a reputable breeder. This means that his mother and father are healthy dogs without genetic problems or anything else. In other words, your puppy will be as healthy as possible, hence having better odds to live longer.

2. Proper Diet

All dogs need a proper and healthy diet. If you feed him junk food, fast food, and all the similar, he won’t live long. A proper diet for collies can ensure that they stay healthy and have all the nutrients they need. Adjust the diet as a dog ages and talk to your vet about which one is the best. Treats are part of a diet. Just so you know.

3. A Lot of Physical Activity

Collies are very active dogs. They need a lot of physical activity. This is mandatory if you want your collie to live longer. Physical activity allows your pet to maintain his proper health and stay in good shape. Without physical activity, dogs become slow, obese, and unhealthy. They cannot burn the calories they eat.

4. Regular Vet Checks

It is mandatory and it is recommended to do with all dogs and pets in general. Most of the health issues above do have a treatment. But you need to start as soon as possible, at an early age. That’s why you should take your pet to a vet for a check on a regular basis.

The Final Word

How long do collies live? They live long, as you can see. In order to make sure your pet lives long, you need to feed him healthy food, allow him to be physically active, and treat any diseases and health issues as soon as you can. Collies are great dogs and ideal pets for most of us. You will want him next to you as long as his genetics allow it.
