You probably can see a dog going in circles a few times per week. Why do dogs circle constantly? There are two main types of reasons. The first one is a set of harmless reasons that are more common and most dogs do this due to one of the reasons from the group. The second set of reasons is not harmless! In order to get the best answer and the one you can use, you need to know about both possibilities.

Why Do Dogs Circle? Main Reasons Explained.

Your dog can walk in circles a couple of times per day. There are a few reasons why they do this. For instance, your dog learned this in his training. He will walk in circles so he will get the reward which is usually a treat. Why do dogs circle constantly? He knows that doing something you like will get him a treat and he will do this as many times as he likes. Keep in mind that dogs can do all sorts of things for this purpose only.

Most dogs will walk in circles when they want to go potty. Others will do this before they lay down. Don’t forget that a dog who is chasing his tail can do this due to harmless reasons. He plays and there is nothing wrong with that. We must add that a dog who spins before he lies down is very common and most pets will do this every single day. You don’t have to worry about anything here and just treat this as normal.

Some dogs will walk in circles when outside. They want to cool down the soil before they lie down. Others will dig a small hole and then walk in circles. Yes, the soil beneath the surface is always cooler and a dog knows that. He will do this in order to remove heat and enjoy. Some dogs will also do this during the winter. The soil under the snow or surface is warmer and he knows that as well. There is no need to add that this is another harmless reason why dogs walk in circles.

In general, all of these reasons are harmless and you shouldn’t worry about anything. It is perfectly normal and all dogs will do this every now and then.

Health Issues That Cause Walking In Circles

Sadly, walking in circles is not always harmless. There are a lot of medical conditions and issues that can cause this behavior. One of them is seizures. These can happen at any given time and you will see that your pet shows a lot of different symptoms. Some dogs will drool, others fall down and some will have bathroom accidents all the time. Inability to focus and biting are additional symptoms that may occur. Try to remember that if this is the case, it will start suddenly and there won’t be any traces or any other explanations.

A dog can do this due to OCD. Yes, dogs can have it just like humans. But, they can’t open and close the door 3 or a specific number of times. However, they can walk in circles. Some dogs will walk all the time in circles while others will do this occasionally. If this is the case, you may want to take him to a vet or you will want to talk to a trainer and find a solution.

An ear infection can cause this behavior as well. Your dog will walk in circles and he will also rub his head. He is in discomfort and he needs a solution. Yes, this is another issue that requires medical attention and proper treatment.

Forebrain Dysfunction

Forebrain dysfunction is another health issue that can cause your dog to walk in circles. Sadly, it is very common and it affects a large number of dogs. We will try to explain this condition better below.

We must add that forebrain dysfunction is a common problem here and it can affect a lot of dogs. There are a few signs of this issue and walking in circles is just one of them. Your dog may also show behavior changes, head pressing, blindness and have seizures.

Forebrain dysfunction is dangerous and there are a few causes of it:

  • Tumor- A tumor that grows in the forebrain of your dog can cause this main issue. It is the growth of unwanted and DNA-changed cells that can kill healthy cells and cause all sorts of problems. It is a severe condition that requires you to take the dog to a vet as soon as you can. If you diagnose it sooner, your pet will have better luck healing and recovering.
  • Stroke– means that your dog will have a part of his brain with no oxygen. If this happens to the forebrain he will develop forebrain dysfunction. Yes, it is very dangerous as you can assume.
  • Inflammation in the brain- There are a lot of inflammations that can happen in this case and all of them are serious. Your dog may have inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or inflammation of the membranes that go all around the brain (meningitis). However, some dogs may have both which is obviously even more severe and vets call it meningoencephalitis.
  • Hydrocephalus– It happens when the fluids build up in the brain. Some dogs are born with this while others can develop it later in life. In addition, dogs with this condition may have a domed skull, difficulty learning, drinking water, eating, etc.

The Final Word

Why do dogs circle constantly? They do this because they have a harmless reason which is one of the above, in a dedicated section. You need to know that dogs will always try to get or do something after walking in circles which can make diagnosing easier. If your pet starts walking in circles all of a sudden and shows some other signs you will want to take him to a vet. These other signs include pacing, falling down, rubbing his head, and showing discomfort.
