Dogs can vomit due to numerous reasons. But, in this scenario, you will have to look at the color, the consistency, and also the frequency when a dog is vomiting. What do you do when a dog throws up yellow? Well, you may need to do a lot of things. This is not as obvious or straightforward an issue as when dogs vomit ordinary digested food. There is a perfectly clear explanation that we will share with you right now.

Your Dogs Is Vomiting Bile

When a dog vomits yellow, it means that he vomits bile. This is liquid that comes from the liver to the digestive tract and also the gallbladder. When a dog throws up yellow it can mean that he has an empty stomach so he can only vomit the liquid he produces. This is one of the examples of why this may happen. Bile is an essential liquid that helps your dog with digestion. It will help the dog break down nutrients and absorb them.

A dog who vomits bile can also vomit yellow mucus which is much thicker and looks foamy. Try to remember that there are a lot of reasons why this can happen. We will explain the most common below.

  • Due To Grass Consumption

Some dogs just love to eat grass. When they do this in large amounts, they can vomit yellow or they can vomit in other colors. Keep in mind that this can happen at any given moment or won’t happen at all despite the fact your dog eats a lot of grass. In addition, if a dog eats a lot of grass, it usually means that he has a nutrient deficiency.

  • Empty Stomach

The most common reason here is when a dog refuses to eat for a long period of time. He will irritate the stomach (the lining of the stomach more precisely). But, in his stomach, there is only bile. As such, he will vomit it in order to relieve discomfort and feel better. This can happen at any given moment and you will have to find the cause why your dog refuses to eat.

  • Car Sickness or Heatstroke

Here we can see two different explanations that both can cause the same thing. If a dog vomits yellow, it can be due to car sickness or heatstroke. It simply means that a dog will end up with an upset stomach and he will feel nausea. His stomach is empty hence he must vomit bile which is the only thing in the stomach now. If a dog eats and then vomits due to car sickness or heatstroke, he will have more common vomiting.

  • Food Allergy

Yes, a dog can vomit and can even vomit yellow mucus if he has a food allergy. The most common causes here are soy, fish, dairy, beef, wheat, egg, corn, lamb, and many other foods. An interesting fact is that your dog can develop a food allergy even if he has been eating that food for years. Once this happens, you will have to stop feeding him that food. He can’t eat it ever again.

Vomiting Can Be A Sign Of Something Serious

In many cases, a dog will vomit because he ate too much or he ate something bad. But, he can vomit due to all kinds of other reasons. These ones here are more severe and in each one, we can see vomiting as a symptom rather than the main problem.

  • Gastrointestinal Issues

These can be bad. There are a lot of variations here so you will have to take him to a vet. Intestinal parasites, IBD, cancers, and liver disease can all cause this. In general, yellow vomit is a sign of massive digestive system distress. But, your dog will have other symptoms as well which can help you diagnose the main issue. Look for signs like depression, lethargy, vomiting blood, weight loss, and loss of appetite.

  • Pancreatitis

In some cases, a dog can end up with inflamed pancreatitis. He will usually display other signs like diarrhea and massive abdominal pain. Try to remember that if this is the case, your dog will vomit yellow between 1 and 5 days after he ate bad food. Yes, fatty or oily foods can cause pancreatitis.

  • Blockage

If a dog eats something that he cannot digest or remove from the digestive system, he can end up with a blockage. What this means is that the digested food and the stool won’t be able to get out. One of the symptoms here is yellow vomit.

Here we must add that pica can cause this. It is a disorder in which a dog will eat almost anything he can. These dogs eat rocks which can cause blockage instantly. Pica can affect people as well so keep that in mind.

Treating Vomiting

If your dog throws up yellow, you may start with simple things. The first one is to feed him small but more frequent meals. Basically, this will put less stress on the stomach of a dog so he will probably stop vomiting. If you are feeding your pet 2 cups of food per day (one in the morning and the second in the evening) you can try and feed him half a cup 4 times per day.

Always monitor the diet of a dog. You will have to be positive that the dog doesn’t eat toxins, chemicals, or anything similar. Also, you need to feed him food that is safe. The best diet depends on the breed, age, and health of a dog.

If you notice any additional signs or issues with your dog who vomits yellow, take him to a vet. It is possible that he needs proper treatment due to the fact some massive problem is present.

The Final Word

What to do when a dog throws up yellow? The first thing is to stay calm and monitor his progress. If your dog recovers completely, there is no need to worry. If there are other signs, issues, or complications, you will have to take him to a vet. This issue is generally more severe when a dog vomits ‘’normally’’.
