We all know that humans dream all the time, when we sleep, of course. What about dogs? Do dogs have wet dreams, and do they dream at all? It is definitely an interesting question to cover, and something we will have to do right now. We will also reveal the most important, related matters and try to give you all the answers you need to know.

Do Dogs Have Wet Dreams?

You may know the answer already or you may find it impossible, but it is accurate. Yes, dogs have wet dreams, similar to humans. We cannot tell with 100% guarantee what they dream about, but it should be obvious. They probably dream about mating. We don’t believe they can implement other, related factors here, such as seduction, foreplay, etc. However, some variations are possible.

It is also possible that a dog will dream about some event he had with another dog. Of course, that even will probably be changed, and it won’t be exactly the same. The aforementioned case refers to all dogs, regardless of their breed and gender. But it doesn’t refer to small puppies. They will start having wet dreams when they are sexually mature.

The next time you see a wet spot on the floor while your dog is sleeping, you may know the answer. It is unlikely to drool or pee. Of course, all of this is perfectly normal, and there is no need to worry about it.

There were countless studies that proved that all dogs dream. Scientists monitored their brain waves and determined that the patterns and the waves, in general, looked a lot like the ones in humans when they sleep! In other words, dogs do dream.

Dogs also have REM, or rapid eye movement, and a deep sleep stage in which you can see their breathing become irregular. There are countless variations, and some dogs may dream less commonly than others, but all of them dream.

How and When My Dog Will Dream?

When dogs sleep, they have two stages, just like we do. The first one is SWS and it means slow-wave sleep. This stage starts as soon as your dog starts sleeping and his muscles are not relaxed. He can easily wake up and start running. On the other hand, his brain waves are slow and they are preparing for the next stage.

The next stage is REM and we have explained that. It starts after 20 minutes of the SWS stage and it means that the muscles of your pet are completely relaxed and that his brain waves are fast. This is the stage in which your dog will dream. All of this applies to humans as well and it is identical.

You can tell when your pet is dreaming. There will be a few signs that are easy to see and can be noticed easily. First of all, your pet will move his eyes quickly. This is the most obvious sign, and it can be seen in humans as well. Then, he will likely move his legs and tail. If he dreams about running, he will likely move all his legs.

To see these signs, you may want to have a lot of physical activity with your pet during the day. Then, let him sleep and monitor his movement. You will likely see all of these signs. But you can also hear something. Dogs who dream will likely bark and make noise. They will do this without waking up! It is probable that a dog will bark if he dreams of something that requires barking. It is one of the “strongest” signs that your pet is dreaming of right now.

An interesting fact is that dog size affects dreaming as well. For example, a smaller dog breed will sleep less and have fewer dreams. Large breeds need more sleep, and they will dream more frequently. This means that a dog that is massive in size won’t be able to stay awake during the day like a small dog. On the other hand, puppies sleep and dream all the time. They have a lot of new experiences, and some of these are transferred into their dreams.

Dogs Dream About Everything

You may believe that we don’t know about what dogs dream. In reality, we know a lot. Several studies and researches have been conducted all over the globe and they discovered what dogs dream. In essence, they dream about normal things such as walking with their owner, running, playing, and mating. Yes, this is the main origin of wet dreams and as we have mentioned earlier, there is nothing wrong with it.

Dogs Have Nightmares As Well

If dogs dream and have wet dreams, they must have nightmares as well. Sadly, this is a bad thing about being able to dream. All dogs have nightmares, but they are different from the ones we have. For example, dogs cannot have a nightmare about ghosts, monsters, etc. They will have a nightmare about a bad thing that happens to them. This may be due to a bad owner, an incident with another dog, or anything similar.

It is rare, but it can happen that your dog starts sleeping, barks, and comes to your bed. This means that he had a nightmare and needs you. Don’t push him out of your bed.

The Final Word

Can dogs dream and do dogs have wet dreams? The answer is yes to both parts of the question. In addition, they can have normal dreams like humans and nightmares. Wet dreams are not as common as you may believe but they do happen in all dogs and they can leave a ‘’trace’’ on the floor.
