Occasionally, you can see a dog rolling over on a toy. It is worth noting that dogs may roll over on different things that include blankets, treats, and more. But why do dogs roll on their toys occasionally?

There are a few reasons for that, and we will explain all of them below. Yes, you still need to recognise why your dog is acting this way, but it is relatively simple.

Why Do Dogs Roll On Their Toys: Possible Reasons

There are many reasons why dogs will roll over the toys. They can do this all the time or once a month. All we can say at this point is that this action looks great and is something to look for. Anyway, let’s start by explaining the most common reasons.

1. He Is Very Happy

When a dog is happy, he will jump and run around. Well, some dogs will also roll on their toys. It is followed by a happy face, and it can be seen all the time.

If you see this, it means that your dog is 100% happy, and he is trying to tell you that. In addition, he may roll on almost anything, and the explanation is always the same.

Don’t forget that dogs have their favourite toys. It can be a tennis ball or a teddy bear; it makes no difference. You will also see him playing with this toy more often and having a great time. In all situations of this kind, he is simply trying to tell you that he is happy. One rolling worth more than 1000 words.

2. He Wants To Play With You

Believe it or not, this is a very common reason. Your dog may be trying to tell you that he wants you to play with him and the toys. It is an amazing experience to be able to experience this.

Sadly, this is a rare reason for a dog to roll on toys. If you are lucky, your pet may do this more often.

3. He Is Scratching

Yes, your dog is matters than you may believe. Usually, they will roll on toys so they can scratch their back, which is out of reach.

Dog owners can notice that most dogs will roll on hard surfaces, including wooden toys or anything similar. This is because these objects can actually scratch their backs. Of course, some dogs just roll on anything they can have, even soft toys.

If you notice your pet doing this all the time, he may have a severe itching issue. This can be caused by fleas or even skin allergies. If the issue is consistent, take him to a veterinarian and look for any signs of skin infection.

4. He Is Obsessive

Sadly, not all reasons why a dog will roll on toys are good. For instance, your pet may do this because he is obsessive. There is a simple method to tell if this is the case.

It is as if your dog is growling at you once you touch or take a toy from him. It simply means that your pet must change his behavior, and you need to help him do that.

On the other hand, most situations of this kind are harmless. He is likely attached to all the toys or just a  and he really likes them. He will do this for some time, and then he will return to normal. Anyway, if he is not growling at you, there is no need to be concerned.

5. He Wants To Leave His Scent On The Toys

It is another common reason why a dog will roll on the toys. He does this in order to leave the scent on the toys. It is mandatory to add that they can roll over or scratch on all kinds of objects. It means that he will leave the scent so other pets and especially other dogs know that this is his territory.

When it comes to rolling on the toys, it means that he is marking the territory and the toys. He wants to tell everyone that these toys have an owner.

Dogs are crazy about their territory, and they don’t like to see other pets on their land. In addition, they treat all of the toys and objects on their territory as their own, and they don’t like to share.

What If Your Dog Is Rolling On Items That Smell?

Although these topics are not completely related, there are a few similarities and a few things to know. Basically, there are two main reasons why a pet will do this. First of all, it is in his blood, or instinct, if you prefer. Dogs got this from wolves.

They do this in order to mask their own smell. As such, we can see dogs rolling against carcasses or a smelly plant. They don’t have the actual need to do this (wolves hide their scent when they hunt), but it is instinctual, and as such, it is a powerful need.

Believe it or not, some dogs will do this after they are groomed and have a scent. The explanation is simple. He will do this in order to mask the scent of perfume or even shampoo. Your dog doesn’t like that smell, and he will do anything he can in order to remove it.

Yes, it can be a nightmare. You come home with your groomed and perfectly nice dog and the first thing he does is rolling in the mud. Now that you know why he is doing this, you may want to change the shampoo or the perfume if you use it.

Conclusion

Why do dogs roll on their toys occasionally?

As you were able to see, there are a few reasons. It is important to remember that some dogs can roll for multiple reasons, others for just one specific reason. There is no need to worry about and you can enjoy looking at your pet having a great time.
